Simply put, Pathfinder is D&D3.75: a COMPATIBLE improvement on D&D3.5
MANY people consider Pathfinder to be WHAT Wizards of the Coast should have created, instead of re-inventing a new system (4th) that requires people to re-purchase all their books (this is why all my friends hate 4th and will not play it - well, that and also the fact that, according to them, it is an adaptation of a MMORPG to a table top game which looses all the 'flavor' of Dungeons & Dragon).

With Pathfinder (the rules are free here), you can KEEP all your D&D3.5 book as they remain usable in Pathfinder.
In my current Friday-night games, we play a old D&D3.5 module, in Pathfinder !!

TOS+ supports BOTH 3.5 and Pathfinder since they are very similar.

There is also a free 3.5 to PF PDF you can download from Pazio on there site. There are lots of little differences, too many to list.
