Carrion King: The Old Monastery

The wishes unleashed over the ages by two genies have warped the Pale Mountain region to keep alive both a terrible beast and a heroic protector. These wishes have subtly warped the weave of the world to put a handful of adventurers on a trail to Kelmarane. It is these adventurers who will tread the path of fate at its most treacherous juncture, and it is they who will ultimately chart the course of history.

ImageCorridor A5 has nothing interesting about it other than the opening to an overgrown garden. The brush in here is thick and tangled, though there is some room in places to slowly walk through.
ImageThis room, A12, is small. The brightly painted walls of this small chapel, probably meant for personal prayer and reflection, stand out as unusually garish for the otherwise reserved architecture notable elsewhere in the monastery. On the walls, numerous rectangular wooden plates traced in gold filigree depict a strapping warrior battling creatures of fire, riding a chariot on the wind, and engaging in other acts of noble heroism. It is the same figure depicted elsewhere in the monastery, but the sheer number of images here suggest that this shrine was especially important to the clerics who honored him as a saint of Sarenrae. Perhaps a quarter of the gold plates have been pried away or hacked apart by long-absent vandals.
ImageOpposite the door, dominating a section of the north wall, stands a man-sized statue of the warrior, its face marred by what look like numerous blows from an axe. The statue holds both hands in front of him, bent at the elbow, palms up, as if expecting an offering. Several deep rents from similar axe blows make it clear that someone tried to hack the arms from the statue decades ago, but was unable to do so.

Ox signals the others to keep closer, waits a bit so they do so, then moves west, going in the A4 corridor.

Erin is intrigued by the small room and does a close examination of the small room (1d20+5=14). There is no hurry so she takes her time.
She is looking for possible hidden compartments, writings, knobs or similar.
THINKING: why would anybody try to make offering impossible? what would be needed to offer? and what for?

Erin enters the room and approaches the statue while Ox seems to be trying to keep everyone together. She begins touching the statue, looking for hidden compartments and such, but finds nothing of interest. For someone else seeing her, you might think to hear the words, "stop touching me there!" be proclaimed, but yet there is nothing. Then a small chirp from Erin draws your attention.

There's stairs behind here. They go down also.

The statue makes it near impossible to get by.

Ox, do you want to investigate the west side of the hall or wait for the others?... we can find how to get down there when we know its safe up here.
Erin moves a little towards the west side stopping and carefully checking the opening on the north wall (she looks carefully, not to be pierced by arrows again :))

While everyone moves together, Erin tries to peek into the room west of A12. From her position, she can tell that daylight is beaming in from the north of A9, but is not able to make out further details. She thinks she might have heard something, a flutter, but she eventually dismisses the notion, not bothering to mention the sound of a breeze.

As is apparent, this room is of no great size or height. Here you find more carvings and images of this same male warrior as elsewhere in the monastery. Ox enters room A10 and daylight beams in from the outside. This austere octagonal chamber has a tall roof and an aerie of leering gargoyles perched atop each point where a wall meets another wall. An unholy stench of rotting meat, dried blood, and animal excrement hangs heavy in the air, no doubt from the fine crust of gore, animal carcasses, matted leaves, and guano covering the floor.

Dashki keeps watch of the hall and of Ox, Simi and Erin in the rooms.

On entering the room, you can now hear wings flapping in the shadows. At that same time two bat-like creatures descend on Ox and one on Simi. One of the creatures latches on to Ox, but the other two were not able to latch on. The creature sinks it's proboscis into Ox and he feels weaker. (Ox -3 CON)

  7. Kroft
  8. Ox
  9. Simi
  10. End-round Validation
Ox and Simi get an Opp Attack at the creatures that failed their grapple during the surprise round, plus any normal actions for this round.

Ox and Simi take their Opp Attacks from the surprise round.

Ox takes his Opp Attack S1 (1d20+4=15, 2d6+4=14) and unfortunately finds the thing too quick to hit.

Leathery wings fall to the ground as Simi's blade obliterates the creatures body. (S3 Dead)

Laron moves in for a better view.

S1 moves to attack Simi, while S2 still has a hold of Ox.

Touch Attack/Grapple/Blood Drain (1d20+7=19, 1d20+1=17, 1d4=3, 1d20+7=8, 1d20+1=8, 1d4=1)
This roll is wrong. I looked back at the creature and as long as it is still attacked to its victim when starting its turn, it automatically gets a blood drain.
S1 is able to land on Simi, but before anything else can be done, Simi manages to shake it off. S2 saps Ox of more juice and detaches from Ox, attempting to fly off. Ox takes his Opp Attack vs S2. (1d20+4=9, 2d6+4=12) It seems even engorged with Ox's blood, the little thing is too agile for him to hit, maybe he's feeling the effects of the drain. (Ox -1CON)
Simi takes his Opp Attack on S2 (1d20+6=22, 1d8+3=8) You get the feeling that Simi is a justified Lean Mean Killing Machine of little flying things as his longsword decimates yet another of these annoying things. The blood it drained from Ox is now splattered everywhere. (S2 Dead)

Erin takes the time to show off her talents in skill and weapon as she impales the bat thing with her dagger. Taking a good look at the creature she sees it has a long probosces and four clawed legs, two leathery bat-like wings and a small head and body.

(Encounter over. What now?)

On the floor is the bodies of past meals and among these are found a fine silver bowl, a chime, and 43gp. Erin begins looking about the room and in the south west wall, she finds a secret door. She struggles fiercely at the door and it slowly begins to nudge open. Some minutes later, the door is open enough for everyone to enter, if they choose. Looming walls with no apparent doors enclose this small roofless garden. Monks must once have come here to relax and contemplate the ways of nature, but any order they might have brought to the place all those years ago is almost impossible to notice now, as a wild cacophony of multicolored scrub plants and desert weeds have almost completely overgrown the space.
