LoF: The Carrion King; Day Three

The wishes unleashed over the ages by two genies have warped the Pale Mountain region to keep alive both a terrible beast and a heroic protector. These wishes have subtly warped the weave of the world to put a handful of adventurers on a trail to Kelmarane. It is these adventurers who will tread the path of fate at its most treacherous juncture, and it is they who will ultimately chart the course of history.

Assuming Gnoll 2 goes down before Kroft goes again, he moves around behind Laron (to D5) and slashes at Gnoll 4.

Laron shouts out his surprise by the enormous creature and thus missing the gnoll as he tries attacking it. Katja is able to claw at the gnoll, but his armor seems too tough. Another look at the creature and Laron thinks he recalls something like this being described to him once. Thinking back he draws up a name, Dust Digger. He doesn't remember anything else about it though.

Kroft attacks the gnoll while it seems a bit distracted by the creature. It seems he didn't expect it to appear where it had. Kroft slices through the gnoll's armor with his scimitar drawing blood. (G4, 7/18)

G4, seeing his two companions struggling for their lives, drops his weapon and flees for town.

Kroft and Laron Opp Attack Damage vs Fleeing Gnoll 4 (1d20+5=21, 1d6+2=7, 1d20+1=12, 1d6=1) Kroft hits the gnoll as it whirls about to run, but it gets just out of reach for Laron to hit. Kroft's wound is too much for the gnoll to continues to run though and soon collapses to the ground. (G4, Unconscious, Dying, -1/18)
Twiglet wrote:If necessary and possible I will assist Ox with the Prizoner :-) otherwise just retreat 5ft to D7.
Eli offers aid to Ox in breaking free the prisoner. Together they cut his binds and move him away from the threat.
Gnolls 1 and 3 try as best they can to break free, but fail as the creature's tentacles are too big and muscular.
The creature, having a good hold, maneuvers gnoll 1 toward the center of the creature's body where a gaping maw opens wide and pulls the gnoll in. In an instant the gnoll is gone. Gnoll 3 is frantic with fright after seeing the other gnoll swallowed whole. The creature does nothing else.

ImageWith all haste, you all make a run for it out of the Cacti field with the rescued prisoner in tow.

Imagean excited and exhausted tone: Thank you! Thank you ever so much, the man exclaims, doing his best to keep up with all of you.

ImageLooking back, one of you see a tentacle sweep across the ground and catch hold of the two dying gnolls and drag them into the sinkhole. You can hear the howls of the other gnoll still conscious and very well alive trying desperately to escape, but you never see him above the sinkhole. After a while, there's a cloud of dust and the howls muffle, presumably as the creature returns back under ground, with gnolls in tow. The howls haven't gone unnoticed though. A caw from Katja and Laron is signaling you all to take cover.
ImageLooking back, you see several other gnolls leaving town and heading into the field. You watch carefully to see what they do. Soon they're near the location of the digger and look about briefly. After a moment, the gnolls leave, returning to town with no concern. Seems they attributed the prisoner's absence to the digger and the gnolls were just careless. Seems a good assumption on your part by how casually they return to town.
ImageAs one of you is about to stand and leave, you trip on something. Looking down, you find it to be a mummified pug with a bit of string attached. The ground nearby is disturbed. It reminds you of the area back there at the dust digger. Picking the mummified pug up, it's recognized by Ox as the same pug that Dashki had as a trophy.
ImageContinuing on your way, you finally reach the Old Monastery. You find your return has a welcome party.
ImageWell, I see you found a dust digger. Nasty creatures. Able to sneak up from beneath your feet and you never even know it's there until it strikes,Image says Hadrah, wife if Hadrod, the camel driver whose goat, Rombard, you had rescued previously.
Almah then appears from the monastery. What's this? Where'd he come from? she asks looking at the man.
ImageHe was being taken from town out to the field as some type of cruel sacrifice to the digger. after fighting the Dire Boar, which was what the four gnolls were feeding each day in the building southeast of town, and beating it, we were about to head off to the next building we planed on. We couldn't leave him to their will, so we intervened, says Eli.
ImageHonestly. It's like each time I send you to town, you're coming back with someone new. Is this how you plan on getting me back the town, one person at a time until the gnolls have no one to oppress?
ImageWell, I suppose there was not much else to do. We couldn't just leave him there, and rescuing him was the only choice. who are you sir?

ImageThe man looks up, My name's Oxvard Ma'am. I'm a member of the Lions of Senara, Ma'am. Perhaps we've been heard of? Seeing no recognition from anyone, he continues.
ImageI came to Kelmarane with five other members of my party, explorers from the distant nation of Cheliax seeking treasure in the far off deserts of Katapesh. I've already seen several of my companions murdered by the foul gnolls, but I believe that my friend Felliped may yet live. Felliped escaped the gnolls recently, but I suspect he hasn’t been able to escape the village entirely and has been forced to hide out in one of the ruined buildings. I am a cleric of Abador and wish to offer any services I may have to these men and women who rescued me. I haven't any spells, but tomorrow may be a different story.
 OUT-OF-CHARACTER:
I don't remember which time of day you chose to attack the boar, early in the morning, or after feeding.
If it was before feeding, it's still morning. This whole episode took not more than three hours. The sun is up for two hours, and you still have at least five hours before the gnolls feed the unknown creature in the building across the river, and the boar that is now dead.
If it was after feeding, then it's the same amount of time past, with about the same amount of time before sunset.

A woman of endless purpose, Will you be returning to town to take care of whatever is in that other building, while there's still time? She signals to Garavel to show Oxvard to the kitchen for a meal and any care he may need.

Has anyone seen Dashki lately? We found a mummified pug near the cactus field, and Ox said it was the one Dashki kept as a trophy.

Anyway, I'm ready to go back anytime, but give me 5 minutes, I'd like to talk to Oxvard for a brief moment. Grab me at the kitchen when we're ready to go.

This doesn't ring a bell off hand - should it? We player Pugs last year... even if it is just a couple of days away for our characters :P
 OUT-OF-CHARACTER:
To jog your memory, back in the beginning, after the fire, you went searching for the goat. You found it was held captive by one of those nasty little pugs. Dashki was with you, as he has some experience with them. After the pug was dead, Dashki took it and tied a noose to it and hung it from a staff of something he had. It was his little morbid trophy that even Almah found a bit unsettling from someone in her employ.

tdsprouse wrote:Has anyone seen Dashki lately? We found a mummified pug near the cactus field, and Ox said it was the one Dashki kept as a trophy.

Anyway, I'm ready to go back anytime, but give me 5 minutes, I'd like to talk to Oxvard for a brief moment. Grab me at the kitchen when we're ready to go.

Simi follows after Oxvard to find him in the Kitchen.

Duni, will send you a PM.

Hearing his name, Dashki comes out to see what's up. Someone called me?

Ox would ask Oxvard a few questions (he cares not about privacy)

a) How many prisoners do are the Gnolls holding captive?
b) How many Gnolls does he thinks there is in that Camp?
c) Does he know what is guarded in that house?
d) Does the name Haleen ring any bells?

I know one of my friends was killed yesterday. Another two died during our capture.

We were kept on the first floor. I only know the way to and from the cells we were kept at. I have no real idea of how many, but I think 20 something by the number different gnolls Ive seen from where I was held.

Which house?

I have no idea how that is, sorry.

Laron frowns when Oxvard shows no recognition of Haleen, then answers Ox's question. I'm running close on empty. My healing was used up against the boar, I only have a few abilities left.

So that' it then? There are no more prisoners alive to your knowledge?

e) Do you know at which period of time the Gnolls less active? (i.e. do they sleep during the day or during the night?)

He looks at Ox puzzlingly, We were only five members.
There really wasn't any socializing while captured. I only know what I know from where I was.
As far as a schedule, they have no real schedule that I know of. They seem somewhat random in their methods. Excuse me as I go get an actual meal in me.
With that, Oxvard goes to the kitchen, but seeing Laron's expression, Sorry, but we weren't exactly in town very long. He shrugs and is now in the kitchen with Simi.

Simi returns, and on seeing Dashki he says Hey Dashki, we found that pug that you had kept. it was half buried in the sand near the cacti fields. What's happened?
