Erm... I keep on forgetting the rules on Readying actions and so I forgot about doing that...

If it's okay, then I'll change my Round 4 action to what you suggest.

Yen will pick up the shield and ready for the next attacking lion, making sure the shield is between the lion and the rest of the party.

shai-hulud wrote:Each square containing a lion carcass is difficult terrain. It takes two squares of movement to enter a square containing a lion corpse, and as such, one cannot 5' adjust into one of those squares. For Yen, the lion died on top of his shield. He can take a move action to push the lion carcass off of his shield, or attempt a Strength check DC 15 to pull the shield from beneath the lion as part of the move action to recover the shield (you may take 10 on the check)
How does Yen want to go about collecting his shield? Is he using it for total defense? What square is he going to be in?

Yen will move the lion back to the 13/14 columns (if he can), grab his shield and move up to B12 and ready for the next lion.

In case needed here is a str check: str check to move lion. (1d20 5=12)

No, just getting back has brought on a ton of additional work for me. With the knowledge that the Arena is no longer strictly moderated, I guess I have been debating whether I am interested in taking over moderator duties. I think my answer is no, but I shouldn't have let this match fall by the wayside. Expect an update tomorrow.

Round 5:
Drik (Before lion-readied action is triggered--initiative set to this position in future rounds, should the lion survive)
Lion (20)
Yen (13)
The Black Knight (4)
Horris (-4)

The lion is released and pounces on The Black Knight. As it does, Drik springs into action, casting a spell upon the animal.

Fort save vs. Flare (1d20+6=26)

Unfortunately, the lion is not affected by the spell.

For The Black Knight, I need six attack rolls with the tower shield for opposed rolls vs. the lion's attacks, in addition to his normal actions for the round:

Pounce attack rolls (claw; claw; bite; rake; rake; bite for disarm) (1d20+9=16, 1d20+9=14, 1d20+4=11, 1d20+9=11, 1d20+9=26, 1d20+4=22)

Should The Black Knight defeat the third attack, he automatically defeats the disarm attempt, as well, as that is a result of the Improved Grab ability of the lion, which requires the bite attack succeed.

Here is the damage for the five attacks (if the disarm attempt succeed, the two rake attacks are against The Black Knight, not his shield).

Pounce attack damage (claw; claw; bite; rake; rake) (1d4+5=7, 1d4+5=9, 1d8+2=9, 1d4+2=5, 1d4+2=5)

Should the first three attacks hit, the shield is destroyed (12 damage + 8 damage = 20 damage, putting the shield at 0 hp). The Black Knight must succeed on at least one opposed roll among the first three or his shield is destroyed.

Opposed Grapple chacks vs Lion 3 (1d20+6=23, 1d20+6=23, 1d20+6=17, 1d20+6=12, 1d20+6=13, 1d20+6=10)
The first four attacks of the lion don't hit. So the grab doesn't work either. The tower shield gets no dammage.

Good old reliable tower shield.

On my turn:
Free action: - move back either to A11 or B9 or somewhere where I can hit the lion without the lion having cover from my teammates.
- drop tower shield
Standard action: Attack vs lion 3 (1d20+7=8, 2d4+10=17)
missing the lion.
Move action: Pick up tower shield
Famous Last Words: "No more healing? Let's go in anyways!"

Free Action: Horris Drops Shield
Move Action: B8 to C10
Swift Action: Initiate Punishing Stance; -2 AC
Standard Action: Attack L3 Sapphire Nightmare Blade Attack/Weapon Damage/Maneuver Damage/Punishing Stance Damage vs L3 (1d20+10=18, 1d6+4=7, 1d6=2, 1d6=4) (After rereading the maneuver, I'm supposed to be rolling for a Concentration check vs AC plus the normal attack roll. If the Con succeeds, L3 is FF and the attack roll is vs the FF AC. Attack Roll that Maneuver is part of (1d20+6=19) Horris hits anyhow.)

Result: L3 is Flat-footed to Horris allowing him to hit the lion with his scimitar inflicting a total of 13 damage. Horris is at -2 AC for next round.

Everything here is correct except for the swift action. Horris already has already initiated that stance. It remains active until he changes stance. It is not a one-time use thing. Horris has had the -2 to AC this entire time.

OUT OF CHARACTER
Sorry for the delay, I have not been near a computer the past two days

Yen will drop his shield as he moves from A12 to B12. He will also do a powerful attack against the lion using his great axe.

Attack and damage against lion 3 (1d20 5=9, 1d12 9=14)

And unless flank or something else special happens misses the lion completely.

Sorry all, I have been working 12 hour days. My job is manual labor, and I'm recovering from mono, so I have no energy at all. I'll be back hopefully this weekend. I dunno. Maybe after Christmas when things are not so hectic at work :(. I hope this message disseminates as I don't have the energy to post it elsewhere.

You're going to have to tell your job and your body that you have obligations to the only D&D forum community and thus no time for them to slow you down. :D

No worries, this time of year is crazy hectic anyhow for everyone. I'll let Dink know in LoUE that you're here, but not here. Not sure what other games you're in though. Oh, I'll let that really cool guy running Runelords know too.

Oh, also, Drik has an action before the lion goes again. This lion seems to be lasting longer than the others.

Whoops...

If it's still alive by Drik's next turn, he will start by gauging how well damaged it is (not sure what sort of check that would be... If it's Heal then he only gets +1). If Drik believes the creature is about to fall, then he will shoot it with his crossbow. If it's got plenty of health left, then he will cast Flare again.

IC appears to be not working for me now either.

Round 5:
Drik's spell seems to have failed against the lion, but it appears that the Black Knight has successfully defended himself from the creature's pounce, and has come through intact. Yengretor moves in to attack the lion, but misses, followed by a sweeping miss from The Black Knight, and finally finished up by Horris who lands a spectacular blow!

Round 6:
Fort save vs. Flare (1d20+6=25)

The lion appears unaffected by Drik's spell (I didn't bother with the roll for how hurt the lion is. You can check the numbers to know that it is not near death yet.

Fortunately, the lion is at 50% health, and so it retreats.

Initiative:
Round 6:
Yen
The Black Knight
Horris
Round 7:
Drik
Lion 3

No, there is no AoO:
Withdraw

Withdrawing from melee combat is a full-round action. When you withdraw, you can move up to double your speed. The square you start out in is not considered threatened by any opponent you can see, and therefore visible enemies do not get attacks of opportunity against you when you move from that square. (Invisible enemies still get attacks of opportunity against you, and you can’t withdraw from combat if you’re blinded.) You can’t take a 5-foot step during the same round in which you withdraw.

If, during the process of withdrawing, you move out of a threatened square (other than the one you started in), enemies get attacks of opportunity as normal.

You may not withdraw using a form of movement for which you don’t have a listed speed.

Note that despite the name of this action, you don’t actually have to leave combat entirely.
The lion did not move through any other threatened squares, besides its starting square, which does not count for a withdraw, so no attack of opportunity.

Additionally, what is Yen doing with his melee weapon? Is he dropping it? This is getting confusing (as to where everything is that he has dropped). I'll start making notes on the map, tracking down who has what where.

If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving is not for you.

Yen dropped his Glaive and Shield back by A12. He will lean the Greataxe to his side on top of lion 2 (B13), hopefully in a way he can pick it up again quickly if needed.

Drik draws his crossbow and fires it at the lion.

Sorry, don't have time to IC at the moment. I think his bonus to hit is +5 for 1d6 damage.
