[ENDED][Arena][Shai]: Horris* vs. Garret

Post by shai-hulud » Mon Oct 05, 2009 3:41 pm

My, my, what a beautiful day! The sun is shining, and the air is crisp. The ale vendor is having a special today. A gold piece for two mugs of cool, refreshing home-brewed ale. Why not try some as the gladiators make their way into the battlegrounds.
OUT OF CHARACTER
If you two would, please roll 1d12 for starting location and an initiative roll. I'll have the map ready as soon as I get those rolls.

Reason: Added * to Horris to indicate him as winner of Match

Aamon Runs to B18 drawing his 2 daggers during the move.

For his Opp Attack vs Garret (1d20+5=13, 1d4+4=6)
Horris gets a fast stab in on Garret when he tried casting a spell.

For his opening attack, Horris makes his Wolf Fang Strike with both daggers taking a swift Stance in the process.
Wolf Fang Strike Attack/Damage/Punishing Stance Damage/Attack/Damage vs Garret (1d20+3=20, 1d4+4=8, 1d6=6, 1d20+3=5, 1d4+4=7)
In an awesome display of prowess, Horris raises both daggers high and slams then down into Garret at the color bone. While one deflects away, the other did the finishing act. Horris lets it go so he looks like Garret has a post extending from his shoulder. Garret falls lifeless from the assault and Horris poses for the crowd, one foot on Garret's chest. After posing long enough, Horris takes the dagger back and leaves the arena the way he came.

You can use Concentration to cast a spell, use a spell-like ability, or use a skill defensively, so as to avoid attacks of opportunity altogether. This doesn’t apply to other actions that might provoke attacks of opportunity.

The DC of the check is 15 (plus the spell’s level, if casting a spell or using a spell-like ability defensively). If the Concentration check succeeds, you may attempt the action normally without provoking any attacks of opportunity. A successful Concentration check still doesn’t allow you to take 10 on another check if you are in a stressful situation; you must make the check normally. If the Concentration check fails, the related action also automatically fails (with any appropriate ramifications), and the action is wasted, just as if your concentration had been disrupted by a distraction.
I'm not seeing anything about an attack of opportunity for failing the concentration check. I thought that the spell simply fizzled. Did you see that rule somewhere else? (It is entirely possible, as I seem to recall that happening to one of my characters in the past, and I'm a bit too tired to remember for sure).

As far as the attack from Horris, the first dagger strikes true, cutting Garret down in a single bloody strike! Regardless of the result of the attack of opportunity (which I don't believe happened), Horris is the winner!

Horris runs at top speed towards Garret, drawing two daggers as he rushes across the arena. Garret seems to be attempting to cast a spell, but with Horris right beside him, it is too late. His concentration is spoiled as Horris breathes down his neck.

As Garret's spell fizzles, Horris seems to be using the advantage to strike out at the sorcerer. Horris seems to have gained an animal ferocity. He is leaving himself vulnerable, but his attacks are brutal! Two strikes, and down Garret goes! Only one struck, but it struck deep. Wow, that's a lot of blood! Congratulation to Horris on another rapid victory, and better luck next time to Garret.

Horris: 2 VP, 200gp
Garret: 1 VP, 50 gp.

AFAIK, casting a Spell provokes an AoO...
If you wish to avoid such, you need to cast defensively, and succeed on a DC16 concentration check (15 + spell level)

Reference: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/actionsInCombat.htm
OUT OF CHARACTER
Attacks of Opportunity

Generally, if you cast a spell, you provoke attacks of opportunity from threatening enemies. If you take damage from an attack of opportunity, you must make a Concentration check (DC 10 + points of damage taken + spell level) or lose the spell. Spells that require only a free action to cast don’t provoke attacks of opportunity.

Does the above means that after the AoO, I can still cast the spell, if I do a Concentration check?

Jim asked me to roll...
Concentration check to avoid loosing the Sleep spell versus DC17 (10+6+1) (1d20+6=23)

Based on the above, this is BS.

Action: Garret cast defensively.
If that succeeds: Spellcasting succeeds AND does NOT provoke an attack of opportunity.
If that fails: Spellcasting FAILS and does (NOT?) provoke attack of opportunity

The question is not whether the spell succeeds or fails. The question is whether or not the spell provokes after casting defensively fails. The spell is already lost. You cannot make a concentration check to recover the lost spell. It is too late for that. It is lost. The rules don't say that it provokes after a failed defensive casting, so I'm ruling that it simply failed. No AoO (because Garret cast defensively). The validation I posted stands.
