[suggestion] Point-buy versus rolling [CLOSED]
I think that Point Buy would make for a better option than rolling stats. Given the high powered stats that are generated from 5d6, reroll all ones, take highest three, I'd recommend 40 to 45 point-buy (should we desire to keep things powerful like this).
My specific recommendation would be 42. Anyone agree/disagree?
Additionally, starting gold should be average for your class (as opposed to rolling). This will alleviate chance in determining starting equipment. Some classes need less equipment than others, which is why I don't recommend a single value for all characters (a monk with 200gp would be using the gold to buy one-shot use items rather than the fighter who needs a weapon and armor of some sort to be effective).

Re: Point-buy versus rolling
i never said anything about that. I just said I liked it. but that could also be because of the results I got from my roll.

Re: Point-buy versus rolling
I side with Point buy.

And how is it that it doesn't 'promote balance'?shai-hulud wrote:While interesting, the rolling method does not promote balance.

Un-equal rolls can result.BusyCowboy wrote:And how is it that it doesn't 'promote balance'?
Even if it against most odds, you could end up with all 9, or all 18 for your stats.
This certainly allows for unbalanced attributes.
Perhaps allow 3 'sets' of dice to be rolled per Character, and the player will choose the one he likes best? (might be fun actually, since you migh be torn with the set that has 2x 18's, but also has 2x 9's! lol)

Re: Point-buy versus rolling
So your talking more grid style then...rolled dice, pick and choose from the 6 listed and go from there.
Re: Point-buy versus rolling
No - that would result in too many '18's.BusyCowboy wrote:So your talking more grid style then...rolled dice, pick and choose from the 6 listed and go from there.
I am talking in "Sets" - where you take the WHOLE set, or the other Set.
Example:
Roll #1: (13) - (14) - (16) - (11) - (17) - (14)
Roll #2: (12) - (10) - (16) - (12) - (13) - (16)
Roll #3: (10) - (15) - (18) - (10) - (12) - (15)
For a fighter, roll #3 might be of choice (for high STR), while a Sorcerer could do good with roll #2 (for CHA and DEX). A Monk might be better off with Roll #1...!!
So depending on what class you wish to play, you'll have more options this way.. AND your chances of having 3 BAD sets of rolls should be slim.

Yep, I recall that from I think the 2.0 system.

FINAL RULING - Stats
I have heard / checked the 3 versions of determining stats for a character and have come up with a decision based on the one that I have found to be the most effective, yet well balanced.
My decision, being final, is to go for Richard's idea on the 3 sets. I have chosen this particular variety because it allows a player to create a character, but NOT be stuck with ultimately junked up rolls, but gives them 3 options instead of just 1, or having to figure math to do the point buy system.
Richard, if you may, please post your concept here so others may see.
Thank You
