B1I) Nekki Tinkerton

Post by cave_lion » Wed Sep 30, 2009 4:51 pm

Nekki Tinkerton was orphaned early in life. She spent the majority of her early childhood in an orphanage. She lived there until a woman named Haleen adopted her and cared for her. Haleen, a swashbuckling adventurer, cared for her until just recently. Haleen has mysteriously disappeared. Fearful of what has become her longtime patron, Nekki has decided to search for her, which has led her on her current adventure.

Throughout her youth, Nekki had an unusual fascination with wolves. Haleen's residence in the middle of the city did not stop this odd obsession. Nekki would frequently travel to city parks, or even outside the city. Wolves just had a natural predilection towards the child. As much as she favored them, they favored her in return. Nekki would always beg Haleen to allow her to bring a wolf home with her, but her request was always denied. What would a wolf do in a city? Haleen's rhetorical question was answered last year when Nekki brought an injured wolf pup home, "just until it recovered," Nekki promised. Finally, yielding to the pressure from Nekki and the other children she looked after, Haleen agreed to allow Nekki to care for the wolf, and Kheldon has been Nekki's closest friend ever since.

Throughout her childhood, Nekki had always loved the idea of becoming an adventurer. Far brighter than any of the other children she stayed with, Nekki would use her creativity to come up with fantastical adventures. She would craft weapons and armor from scraps of metal they would find lying around. She would frequent the local weaponsmiths and armorers for insight into how weapons and armor could be produced. She was always wearing some form of armaments, even sleeping with them. Many a night, Haleen would be woken up as Nekki had been cut by the axe she wore at her side to sleep. Nekki, for her part, had become extremely adept at wearing armor. She especially favored armor that she, herself, had crafted. Her skill was unsurpassed by any apprentice armorer in the area. Her work had achieved a level of mastery that allowed her to sell her wares. Before long, she found herself working with precious Mithral! She crafted a breastplate for herself and for Kheldon. In fact, this past year she has spent nearly every waking moment crafting the matching Mithral armor that she and her pup wear. With Haleen's influence, Nekki's sparkling disposition, and the benevolence of a local armorsmith, Nekki had been permitted to use the armorer's forge during the night while he slept. In exchange, the armorer had Nekki work on some of the smaller, more delicate armors that he would make. This meant that occassionally, Nekki had to work 12 to 14 hour days! Her frequent exhaustion would leave her frequently susceptible to suggestion. The other children found it easy to dupe her. She would be far too tired to contradict what they would say. This extended even to when she was not so tired, as Nekki simply had developed a weak will.

Nekki's strong work ethic was rather new. Throughout her childhood, she was always easily distracted. With an affinity towards collections, she would look for anything she could to beautify herself. From pretty feathers to ornate and even ostentatious jewelry, Nekki valued things differently from others. Her armor was priceless, but a pretty bauble was always something to be bartered for. One time, she traded a lock she had spent a month designing and crafting for a worthless feather that a mage had charmed with an illusion to make it sparkle just for her. Ten days later, the illusion wore off, and Nekki threw out the ugly feather, not at all displeased with her trade. Haleen asked her about it, and she said, What? The lock I traded? That was so long ago. Whatever made you think of it? Nekki was never one to think of the past. She has no regrets and only pleasant memories, when she does discuss them. But Nekki's strongest vice is towards items of apparent magical capacity. She has a dangerous curiosity to test them out, regardless of their potentially hazardous effects.

Re: 1I) More of Nekki's Story

You are unsure of where you were born or who your parents were. Your first memories are of living in the orphanage in Gundrun, full of many children just like yourself; whose parents were likely victims of the demon hoards roaming the lands of the Worldwound. Life there was like being in a gray painting--not horrible, but with no color it was hard to get excited about anything. Days passed and led to more days. The only thing special there was the hope that one day you would be able to leave with someone who wanted to love you.

Haleen came for you when you were eight years old. You remember the news of her coming, even before you met her, as visitors looking for a child to adopt were rare, to say the least. You were ever hopeful, though there was always the nagging doubt in your mind that no one would ever want to adopt a little orphaned halfling with so many more human children around. Haleen was a half elf, however, and there were none of those at the orphanage, so maybe she had a chance. Haleen came in a whirlwind and scanning the room where you and the other children were acting at playing (while doing their best to draw her eye), she instantly settled her eyes on you.

The next day you were traveling down the road toward Nerosyan on a small pony loaded with supplies next to Haleen riding on her grey warhorse who was constantly snorting and bowing his head against the reins. You loved that little pony and rode it for many years until Haleen finally allowed you to keep a wolf. Haleen never spoke of why she adopted you, though you often wondered as you grew older. She was always caring and loving to you, but also reserved and distant much of the time. You felt sometimes as though you were an obligation rather than a daughter.

Living in Nerosyan, the Diamond of the North, was always interesting with all the many towered walls and endless stream of crusading clerics and warriors. Little wonder that you wanted to be an adventurer like Haleen. And as saddened as you were by Haleen's disappearance, you couldn't help being excited too. Now there was no one to tell you to wait until you grow up--now there was no choice but for you to decide that you had to grown up...

Following any lead you could find over the next 2 months, you searched the city and surrounding areas for any clues as to where Haleen has disappeared to. After many dead ends, you found one lead that seemed worthy of a chance of success. One of Haleen's old pirate friends, Redrocks, told you that days before she disappeared she had told him she was going to look for a cavern entrance that it was rumored was the source for many of the demons who were corrupting the northern land and spreading south in an ever strengthening horde. The old pirate's visits were a highlight at home because of the amazing stories he told of adventure, as long as he didn't get too close with his rum fueled breath (surely a powerful weapon to be used against man and demon alike.) So you trusted what he said and were confident that wherever Haleen was, it was related to this cavern she had been looking for. Redrocks drew you a map of the region and showed you were Haleen had talked of searching for the cavern entrance. He even offered to come along and help out, which you quickly accepted gratefully.

So you gathered your gear together and left with Redrocks, traveling north up to Kenebres without incident and then crossing the river with a raft of crusaders on a demon hunting mission. They were naturally astounded at the little halfling with her pirate friend and her wolfen companion. One of then knew of Haleen and had talked to her of the cavern you were seeking. They offered to help you search for the cavern entrance, as demon hunting was just as good in one direction as another (and besides, what kind of man could let such a young child wonder off in these lands with just one old drunken pirate to defend her?). You mended their armor and weapons and became fast friends with many of them. On the 12th day of travel, just a day away from the area where Redrocks thought the entrance may be, a horde of demons descended on the party. The battle was fierce, and truthfully for you, the worst thing you had ever witnessed in your short life. During the battle you rode around on Kheldon, dodging attacks and swinging your short sword at anything that approached. The demons were primarily interested in the crusaders, however, so you were spared from taking any wounds. The demons were defeated in the end, but Redrocks was killed in the attack and in the following days every other surviving crusader also ascended to other planes. And so alone again except for your loyal friend Kheldon, and with fearful tears in your eyes, you set off looking for the cavern.

Over the next several days you ranged along the land in a zig zag pattern doing the best you could to look for any unusual type of formation that would suggest an opening into a cavern, while always moving slowly and carefully, to avoid detection by the wandering monsters at every turn of the way. On the third day you peered over a cavern wall and looked down into a desolate valley of rocks and dead scrub below, to see what appeared to be a small dark opening in the side of the valley wall...

Relying upon Kheldon to hunt for food, Nekki had been saving her rations, hoping to store them until it necessary to finally use them up. However, it was not only food that worried her. She had no flint and tinder. She had no torches. She had no oil or lantern. At night, she would spend hours attempting to create a fire. If it had rained, she would do without. She was always cold, and if it were not for Kheldon's warmth, she would likely have frozen to death.

With this new lead before her, Nekki heads into the valley to check it out. She is worried, though, as she has no light source, should she actually decide to enter the cavern.
