[Part 2 - CRYPT OF THE EVERFLAME] 1: Entry Hall

Post by admin » Sun Dec 11, 2011 10:47 am

...an archway of stone is set into the side of a small hill at the bottom of the valley. Moss has overgrown many of the details, but one is still quite clear. The keystone of the arch is carved with a flame symbol with a stylized rune in the middle. Beyond the archway is a darkened tunnel that leads to a pair of massive wooden doors, one of which is slightly ajar.

A pair of horses and a trio of ponies lie slaughtered next to the archway, each corpse still tied to a post set into the ground nearby. A swarm of flies hangs lazily in the air above them.

You carefully approach the gory scene. Nothing moves, except for the flies that have been drawn to the corpses. Ezren determines that the animals here were slain a few days ago with crude blades or perhaps claw. Kyra uncovers some old scattered bones underneath one of the horses - but the animal would need to be moved (STR Check) to get a better picture.

The animals still have saddlebags attached to them, and Merisiel finds one that is full. Inside are 2 days’ worth of rations, a pair of large, comfortable pillows, a quiver with 10 blunt arrows (as normal arrows, but they only deal nonlethal damage), and 2 pints of lamp oil.

Valeros seem a bit uneasy; as he looks about [talk]I’m surprised we haven't seen any carnivores looking for a free meal. I think it would be best if we piled up these carcasses before they get to ripe and burnt them. We couldd use some rope and pull them off to the side here, and splash some of that lamp oil on them.[/talk]

Ezren sees what the area has going on after inspecting the horses and sees that Kyra has found something interesting
[talk]Valeros you think that you could move this one horse so we can see what the old scattered bones are and yes, I agree with your idea with taking care of the horses bodies to burn them with a lamp oil, but would be interested in taking the other pint of lamp oil in case we made need it.
Blunt Arrows??? Were they thinking that they might run into something they did not want to kill??? But, what if we need to do blunt damage to a creature instead of piercing. Might be good to take them in case we need them Merisiel.[/talk]

[talk]I think with use of the rope and some help we could move the horse.[/talk]Valeros quickly moves to work tying the rope to the horse. Then looks too Kyra for help. [talk]Kyra, could you give a hand here?[/talk]

Valeros' first attempt to move the horse is met with little success. But a bit of teamwork allows you to move the horse enough to get a better picture: The bones underneath the horse are clearly very old, and would form a complete skeleton, if it were not for the fact that they were crushed under a horse.

As for burning horses, Kyra points out that it would require a horse-sized funeral pyre: a pint of oil would burn itself out if sprinkled on such a big beast. Another option would be to dig graves - but that would be quite impossible in this rocky gorge, and would take many days of hard labor to do so for five beasts. Chances are few scavengers would be interested in such a rotten meal in any case.

Ezren steps up to the saddle bags to get the 2 pints of oil and looks at the blunt arrows [talk]Merisiel, might be a good idea to take these arrows. We shoule be alright with the horses staying they way they are, but wondering what killed them. By the looks of it, whatever it was came from the crypts because it is partially opened.[/talk]

Ezren takes a better look around the area, looks closely at the horses and the bones that were underneath the one
[talk]Something has stirred within the crypt because these horses were killed by skeletons!! From my knowledge these vile creatures are the walking dead without the husk skin and blunt weapons are the better weapon of choice to use against them.[/talk]

Ezren looking towards Kyra [talk]Am I right about the skeletons on this one Kyra? It looks as if the blunt arrows were brought for a reason.[/talk]

Kyra says, [talk]Yes, crushing weapons are the best way to go against skeletons. Keep those blunt arrows handy, Merisiel, as your rapier will not be very effective against them. Nor will my scimitar, but Sarenrae has granted me other means of dealing with the walking dead...[/talk]

[talk]Still,[/talk] Kyra adds, [talk]It wouldn't hurt for everyone to have a serviceable blunt weapon...[/talk] She looks around for some stout branches or other objects that might serve as clubs.

Maybe she might find some clubs with a survival check?: [dice=totalonly]0[/dice]

Kyra looks down at her feet, and notices that the two femurs of the skeleton would be perfect clubs!

[ooc]It is no problem to get any 'club' weapon while you are outside - just add 'club' as one of your weapons should you want one[/ooc]

Valeros scavenges through the area until he finds what he fills would make a good club and adds it to his gear.[talk]I'm ready, lets go get them![/talk] Valeros becomes a bit excited about aquiring a new weapon, even though it is only a club.

Valeros has his head in the right spot but it might be a good idea to have Merisiel check out the crypt entrance before we regret the decision of not having it done in the first place![/talk]

Both Kyra and Valeros equip themselves with make shift clubs, while Merisiel grabs blunt arrows and then checks out the entrance to the Crypt. The door is ajar, and only darkness can be seen inside. A light source will be required.
