Basement of the Abbey

You and your newfound companions have been contracted to investigate Slip Gallows Abbey, the past headquarters of the late (and unlamented) Gray Deacons. Over forty years ago, all of the Gray Deacons were claimed by an unknown curse and their headquarters sealed by the same magic. Your employer has learned of a way inside and has hired your group of adventurers to slip inside and claim the treasure of the Gray Deacons

Garoth lifts the bar on the door and swings it ajar, peering into the darkness inside. The half-orc rogue can make out bars rising from floor to ceiling, marking four relatively small cells within the chamber. Once Mugtork moves, Garoth can swing the door open far enough to move inside. He moves carefully but it appears that this area is not trapped nor is there a hidden way from the cells.

Once Garoth is fully in the corridor between the cells, he sees that two of the cells have skeletal remains lying on the stone benches within each cell. Compared to his experience, the cells do not look too bad. There are rush mats on the floors instead of straw or nothing at all. The bodies still have what looks to be the remnants of fine clothing, like a noble would wear, rather than simple rags. Unfortunately, it appears that the prisoners were forgotten here after whatever befell the thieves' guild.

The orc will close the door and re-bar it just in case there was something hiding in there we did not see.

Striker stops the Orc from closing the door before he has had a chance to study the cell area trying to notice anything out of the ordinary & Precious sniffs the air for any scents of interest...

Thoros moves to the next door which has a faint life showing from beneath it. Garoth backs out of the small jail and joins Thoros. While the others are moving ahead, Mugtork closes and secures the jail door.

Despite his care, Garoth did not detect any traps in the hallway. He and his companions did not disturb any traps so his skills were obviously adequate to the task. A careful examination of the second door reveals no traps.

Meanwhile, Thoros concentrate trying to detect any undead presence, knowing he can't detect the entire room, but at least through door and into the room behind it.

Garoth cannot find any sign of a lock but the door is stuck or sealed somehow since he cannot budge it. Perhaps some help from the stronger members of the party is in order ... if they don't mind the noise.

Thoros scans for undead. The walls are, for the most part, too thick to allow him to detect anything as is the ceiling overhead. The door, though, barely proves to be a barrier to his magical senses. By swinging back and forth, the oracle thinsk that he has scanned nearly all of the chamber and detected no sign of undead.

The orc will step up and motion that he is willing to open the door if so desired. Prior to bashing the door he will see if there is anyone to help or something that can be used as a ram rod.

Mugtork and Striker combine efforts and slam into the door, knocking it from its hinges and tearing loose the spikes that had been securing it. The door totters for a moment before slamming to the floor, raising a cloud of dust from the floor.

At first glance, everyone sees bodies lying across the floor, strewn haphazardly. After a moment, the party realizes that what they are seeing are merely mannequins. Some of the mannequins had been piled together in the centre of the room to support a torch that still burns despite the unknown amount of time that has passed since this room was last entered. Another light source is lying on the floor nearby, also still shining. Surrounding all of this is a ring of wax puddles, obviously from candles that have burned out completely, and two lanterns.

A quick search finds three backpacks underneath the mannequins in addition to what Cleart identifies as an everburning torch and an ioun torch. The backpacks contain a variety of adventuring gear - ropes, empty vials, flasks of oil, a set of thieves' tools and, most interesting, a book that seems to be locked.

Cleart passes the book to Garoth who peers at the lock for a moment before beginning to use his picks. The lock quickly falls to his skills and the half-orc passes the book back to Cleart. The sorcerer ponders whether to open the book and examine it.

Thoros and Striker examine the room, picking up some items for themselves or for later use. While they are doing this, Mugtork keeps watch in the corridor.

Kasidra and Cleart also help themselves to some of the loose items. While this is going on, Striker watches while Precious noses the manikins and packs. Finally, buried under the bottom layer, Precious pulls loose a large ball of fur. When Striker carefully takes the furry thing away from the leopard and examines it, the ranger realizes that he is looking at the mummified remains of a weasel. Judging from the marks on its ears, Striker thinks that this may have been a wizard’s familiar. From the looks of the dust on the floor and the condition of the weasel, Striker figures that these things have been here for decades – probably from before the entrance tunnel was walled up.

Cleart opens the book and examines it. The writing at the front is clearly magical but illegible to the sorcerer. Until, that is, Cleart casts Read Magic and examines it once again. The book is clearly the travelling spellbook of a wizard and worth a fair bit of coin even if it is unusable to Cleart.

1 – burning hands, feather fall, grease, mage armor, obscuring mist
2 – cat’s grace, invisibility, pyrotechnics, spider climb, stinking cloud, summon swarm, web

Cleart estimates that the spellbook could be sold for 465 gp.

 

When he leafs through the remainder of the book, Cleart comes across a scawled note near the end of the book. The sorcerer reads the note to his companions:

We’re sheltering here in this room, securing the door and making as much light as possible. We can’t get back out. With all these undead, we needed the healing magic that Gwen could provide. But she succumbed to the curse from the cells and poison from one of the things upstairs. We turned back after that and were going to try to get out. Samwise probably could have opened the secret door but the shadows got him on the stairs. We’re hoping that our employer sends someone when we don’t turn up.

Ware the shadows. Whatever the Deacons have become, they lurk in the shadows. We’re hoping that we can make enough light and hold out until help comes.

The search concluded, everyone moves to the corridor and returns to the base of the stairs. Garoth and Mugtork lead the way back to where the body of the outsider remains on the floor. Both had looked upwards before and the scene is unchanged - a plain room with narrow windows high up on the wall. The time should be mid to late afternoon and sunlight should be shining through those windows but the dim, shadowy light at the top of the stairs doesn't give any indication of that. The others wait behind in the corridor.

The orc will wait for Garoth to do his stuff to make sure the stairs are safe. Once all is clear he will move up the stairs in the lead ready to attack anything that needs killing.
