Encounter at Shadow Castle Keep Parts 1 and 2

Master Penkawr uses his scroll to teleport away, promising to bring help as soon as possible, although it likely won't be for three days at the earliest. He wishes his friends luck before he goes.

The party circles around to approach from the southeast. They descend the hill and move cautiously into the open area surrounding the keep, trying to get as close to the lizardfolk as possible before being spotted.

At last, when they think they've pushed their luck as much as they can, Lola casts Bless and Marcus casts Unerring Weapon. Tex and Prost grab their share of the enchanted ammunition. Worrel and Cyrius ready their weapons.

The spellcasting alerts the nearest group of lizardfolk, who croak out an alarm to the rest of their little army. But the party, having prepared for this moment (and having won their initiative rolls), is quicker to act...

Prost has +1 sling bullet ready with Unerring Weapon cast on them...

Is the closest target within 30'...if so sneak atk dmg? Ok, strike that. I just now notice our markers for position...duh :eek: ...I think L17 is the closest... 80 or 90'. So Prost atk would be 29 on L17.

Worrel draws and looses an arrow at the nearest lizardman. He will shift to other targets, particularly if once of the lizardmen begins casting spells or firing back.

Round 1

Prost lets fly a bullet at the closest lizardfolk (L17) and is pleased to see the shot rack his opponent into a moment of dysfunctionality [4 hp damage]. He reloads.

Marcus targets the same lizardfolk with his crossbow, but misses. He reloads.

Worrel draws and looses an arrow at the same target. The missile seems to know exactly where it needs to go, bringing a swift end to the creature [9 hp damage kills it].

Tex shoots two arrows at the next nearest lizardfolk (L15). The first quivers in flight, eagerly anticipating the violent conclusion of the mission on which it has been sent [5 hp damage]. The second misses.

Lola begins a summoning spell...

Cyrius also targets L15 with his MW light crossbow. As he pulls the trigger, he releases a mighty exhale of breath, as if the heave would force more power behind the shot. The extra effort seems to help, but is not quite enough to bring down L15 [3 hp damage].

One of the lizardfolk (S) to the due west retrieves a wand and waves it in the air. A flame appears in the creature's open palm...

Far to the north, another lizardfolk (K) begins yelling orders in an unfamiliar language.

The nearest group of lizardfolk (L15-L19) all fling javelins at Worrel, who slew their comrade. All of them miss badly.

Two of the next nearest group (L11 and L12) move up a little closer to the party, while still remaining behind cover. All of this group (L11-L14) throw their javelins at Prost. All of them also miss.

The remaining groups of lizardfolk remain where they are.

From the soldiers atop the keep, the party hears shouts of surprise, followed by cheers of encouragement.

Round 2

Prost rides Fluffy forward and lets a bullet fly at a lizardman (L15). With stinging force, his shot smacks the enemy over backward, ending their fight [8 hp damage finishes L15]. Prost reloads.

Marcus moves north to be beside Warrel and fires at L19. He concludes that moving and firing at the same time is a bad idea.

Worrel fires at the nearest remaining lizardman (L16) and his arrow flies true. The missile's low drone ceases abruptly as it lodges itself in the target [6 hp damage].

Remaining where he is, Tex fires off two quick arrows. He watches as each shot lands precisely where he wants. The first, as expected, kills L16 [11 hp damage]. The second badly wounds L19 [9 hp damage].

Lola finishes summoning a creature, then loads her crossbow.

Problem: a blink dog is not on the standard summon monster III list. Does Lola have some ability or feat I'm not aware of? If not, you need to pick something from the list. I've put a creature on the map and will give it two turns in Round 3 once we figure out what it is...

 

Cyrius shoots at L19. Soaring over all, his shot arcs, then gracefully descends into the upper most part of the creature [7 hp damage kills L19]. He then stoically reloads his crossbow (I showed it already loaded at the start of Round 2).

The lizard with the wand and flame (S) moves closer to the party (double move). She hisses something at the other lizards in her group (L11-14) as she passes them. The snake (V) follows, but lags behind.

Across the battlefield, the lizard-in-charge (K) begins yelling in a more animated fashion.

The group of lizards to the west (L11-14) begins advancing toward the party. As they approach they throw javelins at Tex. None of them get close.

The last of the party's target group (L18) retreats behind the cover of a big rock, waiting for help to arrive. This move, however, opens him up to potshots from two soldiers (S3, S4) on the corner of the keep. Unfortunately, their arrows miss.

The group of lizards to the north (L20-24) leaves cover to move toward the party. They don't bother with javelins (double move). Three soldiers (S1, S2, S10) open fire on the nearest of the lizards, but none of them hit.

The lizard wielding the wand and flame is just entering optimum range for his bow, so the paladin steps a bit closer before loosing an arrow.

Round 3

Prost rides Fluffy at top speed. Arriving there he attacks L18. His careful aim is rewarded with a satisfying clink [5 hp damage; sneak attack does not apply].

Marcus puts his crossbow away and pulls a bead from his necklace.

The lizard wielding the wand and flame is just entering optimum range for his bow, so Worrel steps a bit closer before loosing an arrow. He misses.

Taking his cue from Worrel, Tex shoots two arrows at the "fire lizard" (S). The delicate flutter of his arrows belies their true intensity; both harshly plunge into their target [13 hp damage total].

Lola moves towards the lower, now advancing group. With the serenity that comes only from long practice, she calmly looses a flawless shot from her crossbow that hits L13 [5 hp damage]. She directs the wolverine towards the same group. It swipes at L13 with its claws, but misses.

Cyrius moves northwest, trying to get into position to shoot at #19 and heading for the fortress.

The lizard with the wand and flame (S) stops and flings the fire from her hand at Worrel. Her aim is not very good, though, and the flame soars harmlessly over Worrel's head. The big viper (V) moves in front of her, protectively.

Across the battlefield, the lizard-in-charge (K) continues yelling as he begins to move east toward another group of rocks. When he leaves cover, two of the soldiers on the tower fire arrows at him. Both of them miss.

The group of lizards to the west (L11-14) surround the wolverine. Most of them miss, but one lucky lizard manages to make contact both with his morningstar and his teeth [11 hp damage total].

The last of the party's target group (L18) tosses a javelin at Fluffy, perhaps hoping to slow Prost's advance, but misses. Two soldiers (S3, S4) on the corner of the keep continue to shoot at him. A lucky shot from the first of them takes out the unfortunate lizard [8 hp damage]. There is much celebration from atop the tower.

The group of lizards from the north (L20-24) continue advancing (double move). Two of them reach Cyrius' location and three seem intent on intercepting Prost. The one closest to the keep takes fire from one of the soldiers (S2), but ducks under the shot.

Lola will move forward 4 squares (sorry can't see the numbers) and then reload.

The wolverine will continue to attack.

Cyrius shoots at L22 with his crossbow (triggering an attack of opportunity from each vs his AC of 22 :eek: ), then drops the weapon (free action?) and unlimbers his shield to get his AC to 25 (move action, will trigger another AoO if the lizardfolk have Combat Reflexes :P )

Worrel fires another arrow at the same lizard, recognizing that its magical powers are the greatest threat at the moment. This arrow also misses the lizard.

Marcus will advance 30' directly west. He will throw the bead at the wolverine triggering the fireball.
