I'm not opposed to that, but we should call in to let the others know that we're staying here for a while.

Mummy, shmummy, Eric retorts curtly. I just don't want to open that thing up and find that the big brother to that insect swarm has burrowed up from below and thinks we'd make a good meal, or something equally unpleasant.

The decision is made to camp up and rest here before further investigation. Brad makes a cell phone call to Linda and Dr. Alexander to let them know about this. During the conversation, Dr. Alexander comments, somewhat cryptically, I will be very interested to see how you and Eric take to a good rest...

After an uninterrupted rest, some of Sahid's injuries heal naturally [1 hp per character level leaves Sahid down 2 hp]. Something odd has happened to Eric, however. His injuries are completely healed, but he finds he can't hear quite as well as he did before he rested [Eric is at -3 on listen checks for today]. Nothing strange happens to Brad or Marcus...
OUT OF CHARACTER
Still need Sahid to weigh in on the next step (opening the sarcophagus?)

Eric frowns as he unsuccessfully tries to clear his ears by holding his nose and exhaling explosively. Does everything seem sort of muffled to any of you? he asks uncertainly.
OUT OF CHARACTER
Of course, being a hero, he accepts his remarkable recovery from injury without question; that, after all, is only his due.

To Eric, Muffled? No. I was just ready to look at your wounds to see if you need more attention, but it seems I did a much better job yesterday then I thought. Marcus heads back to the sarcophagus to open it.

OUT OF CHARACTER
Just a reminder: light in this room is being provided by the green lantern. Brad's joke makes him realize that he's not sure how to turn that off, even if he wanted to...

The four of you move to the corners of the sarcophagus and lift the lid. This causes a sheet of flame to shoot out from beneath the lid in all directions [undetected trap!]. Brad, Eric, and Marcus manage to avoid being burned [successful reflex saves], but Sahid is slightly singed [1 hp damage]. Inside, the sarcophagus is completely empty.

Empty? Marcus begins searching the interior for anything; hidden compartment or something.
Searching the Sarcophagus (1d20+6=12)

This is truly disappointing. In the event he didn't find anything, which I expect he did not, Do you guys care to look? This is when he notices Sahid brushing out some singes on his shirt. You okay there?

I am ok, just the flash of fire when we lifted the lid caught me. Sahid winces as he checks his burns. Perhaps this was not meant as a sarcophogus, but as a mechanism and deterrent from others trying to get down here.

No, Eric responds slowly to Sahid's statement. A trap to keep people out of here wouldn't be rigged up to something standing in the middle of the chamber, it'd be set in an entrance, or thereabouts. That flash fire was meant to discourage people from getting into the sarcophagus, which means either there was something significant here at one time but it's been removed, or there is something significant here and... we're missing it.

Eric will also examine the interior of the sarcophagus, not looking for secret doors or latches, just trying to get a picture of it... and anything that seems 'off' or out of the ordinary.

Well Eric, my thoughts are that this is the entrance. To what I am not sure, but we know that moving it causes those elevators to show up. Perhaps we were expected to open the sarcophogus first, as many grave robbers would, and the flash fire would have been a deterent. Another possible option is that we need all the lanterns here and lit in order for the sarcophogus to actually provide us anything.Either way, now that it is open, I suppose I should take some pictures. Sahid takes a couple snapshots of the inside of the sarcophogus with his camera and also attempts to search it for anything out of the ordinary.

Brad investigates the interior of the sarcophagus as well, trying to look for evidence of something having been there, or anything else out of the ordinary.

This whole chamber is one big puzzle. An empty sarcophagus that is a dial that open elevators in a chamber meant to have lanterns of a particular type all lit. I think you both are right. This whole chamber may be an entrance. There's more to this than what we've found here and I think that answer may be wherever these elevators go. I guess there's not much choice not but to move forward. Brad, you ready to go down?

Eric stays with Sahid. The plan, as I see it, is for Brad and Marcus to enter the elevator, be sent down by Eric and Sahid moving the sarcophagus, then brought back up a minute later and report what they saw. Repeat with the other elevator and proceed based on where things seem to stand.

Marcus and Brad cram themselves into the elevator. It's a tight fit for two of them. If they weren't friends before, they are now...

Moments after the two have squeezed in, and before Sahid and Eric have had a chance to move the sarcophagus, the elevator doors close and the cylinder descends into the floor of its own accord, carrying Marcus and Brad with it.

Sahid and Eric are now alone in the big sarcophagus room. I'm starting a new thread for Marcus and Brad...

Well, crud, Eric declares. This isn't something I expected. Should we move the sarcophagus around in a minute, or just leave it where it is and see what happens?

Right, Eric acknowledges, consulting his watch, one minute and then we crank this puppy through a revolution and hope it calls back the car.

Just as Eric's watch reaches the one minute mark, he and Sahid hear the grinding sound of the elevator returning on it's own! They ready for whatever danger might appear, but when the doors open, they find that it's Marcus who steps out.
OUT OF CHARACTER
Marcus is back. No sign of Brad.
