 OUT-OF-CHARACTER:
Brad is now TX for "Tex." Doctor Alexander is now "DR" for doctor. Hopefully, this will reduce confusion :)

The rope, along with the pitted and scarred wall of the elevator shaft, makes climbing down reasonably easy. At the bottom, the Gamma Team climbs over the shattered remains of the elevator into a room that can best be described as a foyer. Dozens of bas-relief figures similar to the one on the sarcophagus lid in the room above stare disapprovingly from the walls here. Many sport crossed arms and stern expressions. A few of the statues’ heads are missing, and some have huge chunks torn out of them. Others have a weird melted appearance, as if they’d been sprayed by something terrible. A large glyph that looks like a stylized arrow points down a corridor to the north. The glyph is the same one seen on the large statue in the "bedroom" beneath the yellow lantern:
nadrocglyph.jpg

Ten feet down the corridor is a four-way intersection, with corridors branching east and west. Ten feet beyond the intersection, small alcoves are carved into the walls. The long corridor ends with a set of descending stairs. Five feet down the stairs, your floodlights reflect off the surface of water. It appears the complex is flooded beyond that point.

I feel like I'm in all the principal's offices I've ever been called into, Eric remarks, regarding the stern-visaged carvings ruefully. He walks to 1107 and shines his light down the eastern passageway.

It is interesting. One elevator seems to lead to a place of praise and admiration, while this disdain and disgust.
Knowledge Arcane Lore/Search/Knowledge Theology & Philosophy (1d20+9=28, 1d20+8=20, 1d20+5=19) Marcus studies the statues for anything that might make some connection between the opposing nature of one section to this. He's trying to make sense of it all. He's also fascinated at the conditions of the statues, depicting trauma and injury.
 OUT-OF-CHARACTER:
This is what they are showing right? Victims of tragic ends? Or did I misread the description and it's just damage to the statues?

 OUT-OF-CHARACTER:
Slight misreading of the description. The statues are stern, not worshipful, in this section, but they aren't depicting a tragic end. They are damaged post-construction. Something smashed and melted them.

The only arcane symbol is the arrow glyph on the floor, which you've already seen. Search turns up nothing. Marcus' understanding of philosophy leads him to conclude that these statues are intended to remind whoever enters this section of their inferior position relative to the people depicted in the statues, whereas the statues in the other section were placed to honor someone. You might guess that this section is a servants/laborers' quarters, whereas the other section was the residence of someone important.

Yeah, in fact that one looks like my 2nd grade English teacher. Mr. Broson. Mean old guy. Tex kinda shivers a bit, and walks forward to the intersection, checks both ways, and if clear, walks to the Alcoves on the other side.

Sahid looks at the statues and takes a couple of pictures with his camera. Something tells me the damage is probably from those bugs that came out of here.

Although I see where the idea that you are at the principals comes from. Authority figures often have an imposing visage such as these. He also takes a picture of the glyph on the floor.

Interesting that the glyph here looks so much like the one under the yellow lantern. Perhaps it has soe meaning to it.

Eric and Tex move up to check the intersection, shining their floodlights down the east and west branching corridors.

To the east, Eric sees that the corridor opens into a large room. The north and south walls of this large chamber taper in somewhat, and in the nook of the far eastern wall rests a wide stone basin (the white dotted line) backed by a five-foot-tall shelf (the rectangle outlined along the borders of 0107-0108-0207-0208). A familiar-looking hardened orange paste spills out over the two-foot basin lip and covers much of the shelf. Thousands of tiny beetles with bright blue carapaces skitter and tunnel through the chalky substance. A keening insect chorus fills the room. These beetles look very similar to the acid beetles that emerged from down here before, but they are not organized into any kind of aggressive swarm.

To the west, Tex sees a similar shaped room. Several man-sized stone slabs, about four feet off the ground, are arranged in two rows on the north and south sides of this large room. A long-dead corpse lays sprawled out upon one of these slabs, his red vest the only hint of color in the otherwise drab room. The north and south walls taper in somewhat, and the short west wall abuts a small stone stage. The red clay statue of a powerfully built warrior wielding a cylinder-headed greatclub stands tall upon the stage, its eyes surveying the room.

Okay, looks like we've got another stone bathtub in here, filled with that orange gunk, not to mention about a zillion bugs, Eric reports. But they're not swarmin' towards us like a school of starvin' piranha, so don't break out the Molotov cocktails just yet. He steps cautiously to 0907, swinging his flashlight from side to side to illuminate the shadows.

Eric moves farther down the east corridor to illuminate a bit more of the room with the bugs and orange goo. There is some discussion of Molotov cocktails, but no conclusion is reached before Marcus makes a move into the west room to investigate the corpse in the red vest...

Upon entering the room, Marcus emits an involuntary yawn and suddenly feels very tired. He manages, however, to pull himself together and shake off the sudden fatigue. [successful will save]

As he shakes off the strange feeling of sleepiness, Marcus spies a very large (man-sized) beetle lurking behind the last stone slab on the south side of the room. The beetle also spies Marcus and begins staggering threateningly in his general direction, but Marcus is quicker to act...

The beetle comes staggering after Marcus. As it exits the room, its motions become more fluid and it begins chittering aggressively.

Confident the others should be able to handle an oversized insect -- and mindful of the fact that some of them are in the way if he starts shooting it -- Eric will remain where he is and keep an eye on the room to the east, pistol and flashlight in hand, alert for anything that might wake up in there and emerge to investigate the ruckus.

Round 1

Confident the others should be able to handle an oversized insect -- and mindful of the fact that some of them are in the way if he starts shooting it -- Eric remains where he is and keeps an eye on the room to the east, pistol and flashlight in hand.

Sahid stays where he is. More bugs, these things are not like anything I remember seeing. He draws his gun out but does not fire since Marcus and Tex are both in the way.

Marcus draws his gun and fires a round at the bug. Marcus' aim is off and his bullet ricochets off the wall.

The beetle skitters toward Marcus and Tex, breathing a cone of nasty yellowish acid from its maw! The cone encompasses both Marcus and Tex, but Tex manages to duck out of the way. Marcus is not so lucky, receiving minor burns [3 hp acid damage]

Tex responds with a double tap from his Glock. Both bullets penetrate the beetle's carapace, spraying nasty ichor everywhere. The beetle staggers but, miraculously, remains alive.

Dr. Alexander comes up behind Marcus and fires his shiny Colt. The closeness of the shot makes Marcus jump a bit, but the bullet flies right by him directly into the beetle, finishing off the insect.

 OUT-OF-CHARACTER:
That was quick. Combat over.

Damage totals: Marcus 3

Nice job guys, Marcus says as he examines his wound. Becareful entering that room though. It seems to be spelled. Marcus step up to 1708 and looks about the room. Knowledge: Arcane Lore (1d20+9=15) He's looking for any type of writing or object that would indicate the source of this magic.

The bug despatched, Eric steps to 0808 to get an expanded view of the east room, alert for... danger. (Cue the 007 theme.)

Marcus enters the west room. Once again, the feeling of fatigue threatens to overwhelm him, but he shakes it off [Will save success]. He is unable to identify any obvious source of the magic in this room. However, now that he is closer and has time, he can see details about the corpse on the far northwest slab. The red vest worn by the corpse bears the same eight-pointed star symbol seen on the journal you uncovered in the other lantern section. Obviously, this is one of the unnamed author's comrades, likely Uhle, Claus, or Anders. What's strange is that the corpse and its clothes appear well-preserved, except for an obviously crushed skull and some missing chunks of flesh.

Eric moves closer to the east room, into a position where he can shine his light to cover the entire area. This reveals another huge mass of orange goo in the southwest corner. Eric notes the outline of a man-sized oblong shape beneath this goo. The tiny beetles skitter back and forth between the goo-filled basin at the east end of the room and the taller gooey mass in the southwest corner, which appears to be a nest.

The slabs have no drawers or panels. Examining the body, Marcus observes that, apart from the injuries, the man seems in good condition. There is no sign of rot on the corpse or its clothes, which are of an extremely dated style (late 1800's). The corpse wears a gun belt in which is holstered a revolver that looks like a museum piece. On one finger is a shiny silver ring with an intricate feather pattern.

Sorry, forgot the crushed skull part.
Marcus removes the ring and puts it on to see what happens. He then removes the holster and gun looking to see if there are any other bullets on the body. After that, Marcus takes some pictures and tries removing the body from the slab to the floor to see if there is a change in its condition.

Does the clothing seem of the same period as those worn by them remains crushed in the other section or the elevator that does not go down?
