If it will make it easier for us, then yes, by all means, fog him. Can you move it so we can maintain cover as we carry him off the dock?

Sorry for the delay, I figured a map would help your planning, so I needed to put one together.

The red "D" is your target, the drunk fellow. He sits at the end of the dock near the torch that lights the end, looking out over the water.

Where you are, in the dark shaded area, is total darkness. There's no chance he'll see you there.

Approaching into the area of shadowy illumination, the crosshatched shaded area that starts around row 13, will require a stealth check.

If you approach into the torch-lit area, which has no shading and starts around row 7 or 6, he will certainly spot you if he turns around, but if he keeps looking out over the water, you might be able to reach him with a good stealth check.

Fog cloud, once cast, cannot be moved.

I'm not stealthy enough to try sneaking up. How about casting the fog to the side of the pier, so we have better cover?

You know something, I think we're making too much of this. Let's just walk up to him. Maybe me and one other? Or, we just rush him. We walk up as close as the dark allows and rush him.

Oh! How about we make a commotion and drop something? Something like a purse or weapon? Make enough noise that he hears and sees what's dropped. He'll then likely come to see what was dropped. Then someone else hidden can ambush him.
Marcus seems excited at this idea.

Not even seeing that Edgar was beside him, Marcus looks startled by his sudden appearance. Yes, that you certainly are. He smiles. What do you think on all this Edgar? Do you feel you could creep up unnoticed and knock him out?

Without a special ability like the assassin's death attack, there's no certain way to knock him out with one blow. If you are successful in sneaking up on him, you could sneak attack him with your weapon, which risks killing him. You could sneak attack him with an unarmed strike, which would do nonlethal damage. It might be enough to knock him out, it might not...

You can deal non-lethal damage with an ordinary weapon by taking a -4 penalty to hit. If Edgar has a sap, he can use that without any penalty.

Correct, but per the rules for sneak attacks, he cannot use a weapon that deals lethal damage to deal nonlethal damage in a sneak attack, not even with the usual –4 penalty. He can do nonlethal sneak attack damage with a weapon that deals nonlethal damage (like a sap, whip, or an unarmed strike). Edgar does not have a sap or a whip. So, to be very precise about his options:

- Make an attack with his sickle or bow, dealing lethal damage and lethal sneak attack damage
- Make an unarmed strike attack, dealing nonlethal damage and nonlethal sneak attack damage
- Make an attack with his sickle or bow at -4, dealing nonlethal damage and no sneak attack damage

Hey! Do you think firing an arrow at him from here would lure him out? We're in the dark, pretty much. He wouldn't see the shooter. The rest of us could hide out, ready to douse the torch if he's coherent enough to bring it with him.

The rest of the party moves forward a bit and watches as Edgar creeps up behind the drunk. The man remains completely unaware of Edgar's presence until the tiefling bops him on the head with his fist. This does some serious (nonlethal) damage and the man sways a bit, but does not collapse unconscious. Instead, he drops his bottle in the lake and whips his head around to look at Edgar, yelling Oooow! What the #$@%!!!!! The man starts to react with surprising agility and Cyrius realizes he's the only one who's going to have a chance to do anything before the plan goes awry...
OUT OF CHARACTER
Edgar: according to my calculations, your attack roll should have been at +4 (+2 base, +2 strength, and there's no flanking just because someone's unaware of you; you need someone on the other side). You still hit, though.

INITIATIVE ORDER:

Round 1 Begins
Cyrius of the Sudden Blade
Todrick the Drunk Guy
----> Quick Validation
Round 1 Continues
Texudus TreeBender
Edgar Frog - 10 hp damage
Lola
Marcus Tilsworth
Round 2 Begins
Cyrius of the Sudden Blade
Todrick the Drunk Guy
----> Next Validation

Cyrius double moves to 0502, giving Edgar the opportunity to flank Todrick next turn. Unfortunately, this means he cannot manifest his mind blade this turn.
OUT OF CHARACTER
Yes, I could have activated the mind blade and thrown it at Todrick, or tried bull rushing him to knock him into the lake, but the intent here is to capture and interrogate.

Is Cyrius drawing a weapon as he moves? Because otherwise he will not threaten Todrick and, therefore, not provide flanking.

Good point. He'll draw his dagger as he moves.

Round 1 Begins

Cyrius sprints to the end of the dock, drawing his dagger as he goes.

Cursing about his lost bottle and the lump forming on his head, Todrick grabs his polearm and staggers to his feet. Cyrius takes the opportunity to attempt to clock the man with the pommel of his dagger, but misses. [I assumed, since you went to all the trouble to avoid the mind blade, that you wanted to try a nonlethal AoO as well. I did not give Edgar an AoO because he is currently unarmed.]

Round 1 Continues

Lola
Marcus Tilsworth
Round 2 Begins

Todrick the Drunk Guy - injured & drunk

Cyrius will manifest his mind blade, then fight defensively without making an attack. (The idea as that, as the more obvious opponent, he will be the target of Todrick's attack, allowing Edgar to shift into flanking positon for another non-lethal attack.)
