Return to the Whispering Cairn

Post by patransom »

[ooc]As posted in the previous thread, I have assumed that, after leaving the observatory, the party:
  1. Took a day or two in town to fully heal and recover spells,
  2. Returned to the Land Family farm to bury the bones,
  3. Returned to the Whispering Cairn to see if Alastair Land, as promised, has opened that last door for you.
One last chance to let me know if there was anything else you want to do before or in between those activities (e.g., buying additional gear, replenishing arrows, etc.).[/ooc]

After burying the bones of Alastair and his relatives, the party returns to the Whispering Cairn. After making their way through the dark initial passages, they return to the room of colored lanterns, where they find all of the lanterns still in place and lit. From there, they climb the chain of the blue lantern into the corridor above the ceiling. The howling face trap remains retracted into the ceiling, so the party quickly makes its way to the end of the passage to look anew upon the strange chamber with the beam and the metal balls.

Through the gaping mouth at the end of the hallway is a long, dark room with no floor. A three-foot-wide beam of petrified wood spans the chasm. About ten feet below the beam, countless iron spheres the size of large oranges form an irregular floor, but it’s impossible to tell if they represent a wholly solid surface. The walls are covered in a honeycomb of geometric patterns. The featureless stone ceiling extends about twenty feet from the beam. Several things have changed since the party was last here:
  1. The body of the curious grick seems to have disappeared,
  2. There is no sign of the child ghost, Alastair Land,
  3. The featureless metal door at the end of the beam is now open, apparently retracted into the wall.
Enough light shines from beyond the open metal door to illuminate the room with the ball pit. Beyond the door, there appears to be a vast and brightly lit open area, but you are still too far away to make out any details.

Marcus will remind his partners of the last time crossing and the beating they'd taken from the spheres while crossing. He recommends looping a rope over the beam again like before and crossing, this time, all together.
[ooc]One fifty foot length should be enough to loop the beam and tether all of us together.[/ooc]

Wish we had thought of this before leaving town. That will be our next priority, should we not need one this trip. We may find ourselves cut short for lacking such a skill.

[ooc]No one currently has any damage, ability score or otherwise. I have Lola with the same set of spells readied that she went into the Observatory with. If she wants to change them for this expedition, PM me (I should have thought of that before, sorry).[/ooc]

The party ropes up and crawls across the beam. Fortunately, no balls fly across the room. Apparently, either intentionally or coincidentally in opening the far door, the ghost of Alastair Land also deactivate the trap. So the party makes it safely across and, after entering the huge chamber beyond, unropes and looks around.

This cavernous chamber consists of a large stone walkway around a deep chasm that leads into darkness. Four platforms lead from the walkway to a central ring, but two of these platforms are broken. Bright light reminiscent of a summer’s day filters down from the ceiling about forty feet above. Four wide galleries extend from the outer walkway, their far walls covered with enormous bas-relief vistas. From this distance, the sculpting on the walls appears very crude. Figures are blurred and distorted, and it’s impossible to tell what the images are meant to represent. At the center of the chamber, a sighing wind emits from a huge pillar of rushing air. The column of air extends from the floor to the ceiling, cutting through the room’s central ring.

[ooc]does this ring exist just on top of the central thing and the pillar of air seems to originate there? Or, does the pillar of air go through the central thing and continue down into the chasm?[/ooc]

[ooc]Sorry, the description's a little confusing. There's no real pillar, just a pillar of air. A more accurate, complete description below.[/ooc]

The pillar of air appears to originate from the bottom of the chasm. It whooshes up from there, through a hole the central ring (the circle shown on the map) at the same level you're on, and up into the ceiling, where there's another hole.

Tex and Marcus move cautiously into the room to take a look around. Cyrius move specifically to look at the gallery of crude carvings to the east of the door. As Cyrius approaches the bas-reliefs, valves breathe forth a smoky sheet of steam that covers the entire wall. As the steam eddies and plays about the rough carvings, distinct impressionistic images become apparent on the walls. These images shift and move, making them come alive with action. The "movie" depicted is as follows:

This image depicts a towering figure, similar to those seen on the sarcophagus carvings throughout the Cairn, standing over a legion of lesser warriors. As the steam plays about the image, the lesser warriors raise longswords in salute to the leader.

The large figure wears a glyph that looks like:
icosiolglyph.jpg
Each of the lesser warriors also bears a glyph. The warrior at the center of this group has one that looks like this:
zosielglyph.jpg
That's all there is to the "movie," and it continues to play over and over as long as Cyrius stands there.

[ooc]Well crap. That's fine. There's no picture taking. Can't believe I did that. LOL[/ooc]Marcus is a bit confused as to why he was stuck in the same position and not seeing the same thing that Cyrius was seeing when his intention was to "study" the galleries as well. Anyhow, he musters his resolve and goes to the gallery to the opposite side of them to see what's displayed there.

Marcus moves to the gallery to the west of the door, followed by Lola. This triggers a similar "steam movie":

This image depicts a peaceful scene featuring people that look like those in the other movie relaxing in an idyllic country scene. The terrain looks rather similar to the hills around Rastingdrung as they look today, although there are some difference. As the steam runs over the image, dark, twisted shapes emerge from the sculpture’s edges. The shapes coalesce to form monstrous creatures that look like a cross between spiders and wolves. Behind these monsters follows an army of more standard-looking demon-folk (tieflings).

Tex moves out to the northeast gallery, which triggers this "steam movie":

A group of seven proud noblemen present a staff-like rod to a council of similarly attired men in this gallery image. As the steam fills the bas-relief ’s contours, the central figure raises the staff above his head, where it splits into seven irregular parts. Each of the men among the seven presenters bears a glyph. One is familiar to you:

Cyrius and Marcus examine the last gallery:

The bas-relief in this gallery depicts a mighty battle between the noble-looking men of the previous galleries and the monstrous creature/demon-folk army of the southwest gallery. As the steam moves about the image, one of the noblemen (one with an unfamiliar glyph) uses the staff-like rod from northeast gallery to impale a demonic entity that looks like a drider with four arms and a human head flanked by two wolf heads. As the demon, the rod, and the man all vanish into a planar rift, another man (the one with the glyph below) is struck by a beam from the demon's eyes and slumps dead to the ground.

Lola will walk around to between 0311 and 0312 look for something to hang on to and try to investigate the pillar of air. Being very careful and staying in the middle of that walkway. She is also ready to drop to the ground if the wind kicks up, trying to maintain her balance.

While Lola is so engaged, Cyrius will closely examine the western wall for any concealed doors or similar appurtenances. (Perception is +7, +8 to avoid being surprised.)

[ooc]Waited long enough. I'm going to assume Marcus just waits and watches.[/ooc]
Cyrius closely examines the western wall for any concealed doors or similar appurtenances, but finds nothing.

Tex reaches out and touches the moving images, wondering how they work. His hand passes right through the steam, without disturbing the "show." Curiously, the steam is not hot.

Lola moves cautiously out onto the walkway. She doesn't find anything to hang onto, so she stays safely in the center of the platform, away from the edge. As soon as she steps out onto the walkway, two figures float down out of the hole in the ceiling, down through the pillar of air, and emerge hovering just inches above the central platform. The figures do not appear to be creatures exactly. Instead, they appear to be nothing more than ancient suits of ceramic armor somehow animated and with twin longswords gripped in each hand. Squinting her eyes, Lola can tell that the armor is empty, held together by hundreds of tiny uplifting gusts of vapor and wind. Somehow, she can tell they aren't friendly...
windwarrior.jpg
Round 1 Begins

The suits of ancient ceremonial armor float forward toward Lola, the red pennons that festoon their helms twisting and bobbing as if blown by a fierce wind. Skimming just above the walkway, the armors stop at a point just within 20 feet of Lola and each of them clangs its two longswords together. This results in two discordant sonic blasts that travel in a line to smack into Lola [9 hp damage and 7 hp damage; Lola gets a separate DC15 Reflex save for each one, which would reduce them to half damage: 4 hp and 3 hp, respectively]

Lola stands there looking at the two things. Unfortunatltey her reactions are not faster then sound. She takes the full brunt of both hits.
