Approaching the Main Diggings

Geographically, Perearth is a world with some remarkable similarities to our own. But the similarities end there.

Approaching the Main Diggings

Post by patransom » Thu Aug 17, 2006 12:57 am

Sunny says final rites over the dead miner and piles ore over the body to form a crude cairn.

The group then proceeds down the east tunnel, heeding Sunny's advice and moving as quietly as possible. The tunnel decends steeply and narrows as it goes down. It becomes suddenly even steeper after you have travelled about 40 feet (the point Jase is at now).

Reaching this point, you can all see a glowing blue light ahead. The tunnel opens into a vast, rough-hewn cavern -- the main diggings shown on the map the mine supervisor gave you. Blue-green lichens grow on the walls of the cavern, emitting light such that you can see all the way to the east wall. The floor of the cavern is a forest of large stalagmites (those funny shaped triangles on the map), 3 to 5 feet high.

From your vantage point, you can't see any activity in the cavern, although you note what appear to be some discarded miner's tools, picks and such, scattered on the cavern floor near the entrance.

Jase will continue moving quietly until someone stops him, or he sees something in particular.

Jericho says in a hushed voice,

"I would suggest staying along the wall to the right and following it around to the area that is being mined. The northern wall has that shelf on it, and I would not want to be surprised by anything jumping down at me."

Quietly asks, "Do you there is enough light for me to douse the torch for now, or keep it lit?"

Turn to Tana, quietly saying, "I believe there is enough light."

Looking at the steeper slope, does the ground look slick?

Lorn touches Sunny slightly with his bad hand, then whispers, "Tell those in front that if we are attacked by a gang, I will attempt to put some to sleep, do not attack the ones that fall to the ground amid slumber before the others are dispatched."

Lorn will heed the advice of others and follow along the left wall.

Puts out the torch and tucks it into her belt so that she can have both hands free, following the others.

The party moves forward, intending to stick to the right-hand wall. Decending the slope before reaching the cavern, however, Jase feels a click beneath his feet, as if he has stepped on something unusual. A pit opens beneath the feet of the three of you in the lead!

Whatever trigger it was that Jase stepped on provides just enough warning that Jase leaps forward, landing on his knees on the other side of the pit. Kolan, likewise, jumps backwards, bumping into Sunny, but managing not to fall in.

Tana is not so lucky and falls into the pit. [5 hp damage] She finds herself face down 20 feet below the level of the tunnel in a crudly dug, roughly square hole.

[You were actually quite lucky here, two of the three of you made rather difficult reflex saves.]

From his new vantage point Jase can now see much more of the cavern. It is well-lit by the glowing lichen. He sees no enemies, but there is a rough tunnel that decends into darkness on the opposite side. [I've blacked out the portion that Jase can't see, which is the reason for that funny black shape on the map.]

Jericho pulls out some rope from his backpack.

"Perhaps we can tie this off up here and climb down. Does anyone else have any rope that we can throw to Jase so we can climb up the other side."

He then looks for something to tie his rope to.

"Just toss it to me. I can pull her up, or at least hold the rope long enough for her to pull herself up."

Jericho tries to keep his voice hushed as he calls over to Jase.

"That would not get the rest of across the pit. If someone else had rope, you could tie theirs off on your side so we could all climb down on mine and climb back up on your side. Just try to keep quiet so as not to get accosted."

Picks herself up and dusts herself off. Waits for a rope to be dropped down as she assesses her bruises.

I don't have any rope - sorry.

Sunny makes a mental note to get some rope at the next opportunity....

Is there a ledge along the side - you said the hole was crudly dug and roughly circular.... can we hold onto the wall and edge around it? How far across is it? I'd have to get out of this armor if we're going to try to balance or jump it....

The pit is roughly square. There is a ledge around the side, but it would be a difficult balance. On the other hand, the pit walls are very rough and look like they'd be pretty easy to climb.

Caladar says, "I don't have any rope, but I do have some climbing gear." He pulls some crampons out of his pack. "Tie the rope this side and I'll untie it before I climb down last. Then we can toss it to Jase on the other side."

"Works for me. Thanks for the help Caladar."

Jericho will tie the rope off and start climbing down into the pit.

Climb -3 (Hope I don't fall)
