The Feast

Geographically, Perearth is a world with some remarkable similarities to our own. But the similarities end there.

The Feast

Post by patransom » Tue Feb 13, 2007 4:26 pm

Shortly after returning from your various errands/exploration of the town of Durham, a servant comes to fetch you for dinner, leading you to a dining hall near the keep's center.

Already seated around the large table are six well-dressed men and women who you do not recognize, along with Yinta the gnome and Peredur's daughter Bronwyn. All rise as you enter and Yinta says to the others, "Milords and Ladies, these are Lord Peredur's guests of honor this eve." He repeats each of your names for those assembled, then says to you, "May I introduce to you Lord Tend Aldwe and his wife Thena. And Lord Andres Viennal and his family. Milord Peredur will join us shortly, once he has finished his consultation with his advisors ... ah, they arrive as I speak!"

Lord Peredur enters, followed by three others, and the nobles bow. Yinta shouts out names as they enter, "Lord Peredur Orcslayer, Master of Durham and Hero of the Battle of the Bores Fords!"

"Justicar Penol of Helm's Cathedral!"

"Sister Lenore of the Monestary of St. Cuthbert!"

"And Lady Andolyn, whose husband Grendrew we have to thank for the fine meal we are about to receive."

Lord Peredur nods to the nobles, which seems an indication for all to take their seats. Various porters and servants enter, carrying trays of meat, bread, and wine.

As the meal begins, Lord Peredur says "Our feast this night honors these few," he indicates you, "who have done a service for their Lord and all of Durham in resolving some troubles that lately plagued Duvik's Pass. We are hopeful they will entertain us with the full tale of their success."

Sunny launches into his elaborate story, as he posted previously, and those present seem suitably impressed, particularly the gnome Yinta, who seems to enjoy the story thoroughly. As Sunny finishes, the nobles and Bronwyn glance at the rest of you as if to see if you have anything to add to the tale.

Jericho sits very straight in his chair through the whole of the introductions and meal. He is obviously uncomfortable in the current company, however he smirks occasionally as Sunny tells his tale.

When Sunny finishes, Jericho claps lightly. When he notices the eyes of the nobles transfer from Sunny to the group, he just puts his head down a little as if hoping not to be questioned.

Tana inclines her head at the introductions but otherwise stays quiet and allows Sunny to tell his tale.

Sunny - having told his tale - waits a suitable time for the others to add anything he may have left out. If noone adds anything and before the silence can become maddening or awkward - though he stretches that to exactly that moment he offers up his goblet:

"To my fellow heros of Duvik's pass - with whom I would not be sharing this tale with you today!"

And he lets the toast end his tale.

All assembled join in Sunny’s toast. When it seems the conversation is going to lapse, Yinta stands on his chair, compliments Sunny’s tale, and begins one of his own.

The story is that of the Battle of the Bores Fords, during the orc invasion of more than 50 years ago. At a crucial point in the battle, King Conall V, grandfather of the current King, leading the bulk of the forces of Caithness, was unhorsed and badly wounded. Many of the Barons rallied to their wounded King, who was much loved, saving him from certain death, but many of them lost their lives pulling him from the fray.

Seeing their so many leaders fall, the common infantry began to falter. It seemed the orcs would cross the River Bores and pass into central Caithness with little to oppose them. Then a young knight took up the Purple Dragon banner from the slain Baron of Durham and led the few remaining Durham knights in a reckless charge across the fords and into the orc center. Seeing this bravery, the armies of the other Baronies took heart and strengthened their resolve to resist the orcs.

The Caith armies, reinvigorated by the actions of a few, followed suit across the fords and, ultimately, routed the orcs masses there. Soon after, the now disorganized orcs were harried back across the Smoke Mountains, not to be seen in Caithness since.

For his actions, this one young knight, Peredur, earned the nickname Orcslayer. After recovering from his wounds and finding his kingdom safe after years of struggle against the orcs, Conall V awarded Peredur the Barony of Durham, for the previous Baron had left no heir.

Peredur himself sits impassively while the story goes on. Although it seems many of the guests have heard the tale before, they applaud Yinta’s fresh and detailed telling of it and drink a toast to their Lord. When it seems no further storytelling will be forthcoming, talk among the nobles turns to current events in and around Durham, then ultimately to politics.

Listening quietly, you learn that there are differing opinions on the recent coronation of King Conall VI, grandson of Conall V, to the throne in Carrick. Some hope that power will continue to remain in the hands of individual Barons, as it was during the reign of Conall VI’s father, Morrill III, and even more so during the recent reign of the regents. Others hope that Conall VI will unite Caithness more closely, keeping a tighter rein on his Barons and bringing order as his grandfather did. Perhaps surprisingly, you get the sense that Peredur falls on the latter side. All seem to agree, however, that if Conall VI becomes a strong King, it will take some time, as he is yet only 17 years old.

The evening wears long with these stories and talk, and Lord Peredur soon takes his leave, followed by Justicar Penol and Sister Lenore. While Yinta continues to drink and tell jokes, most of the others are beginning to make motions of leaving. A butler appears and asks if you are ready to return to your rooms for the night.

Jericho nods to everyone at the end of his meal. He is enjoying Yinta's stories and jokes and will continue to listen to them as long as he keeps telling them.

He will retire to his room when Yinta finally leaves or passes out.
