Life is the Pits

Geographically, Perearth is a world with some remarkable similarities to our own. But the similarities end there.

Jericho uses 2 Cure Minor Wounds to bring Bram back to consciousness.

There you go, you are still weak but you are past the worst of it.

Upon hearing about the wand that was being used, Jericho turns towards Bronwyn. DId you say he had a wand to keep you alive? He will then rush over to the Bulgan corpse and begin searching it for the wand.

Lorn will carry on using the key to unlock the humans and elves. He will leave the reptillians and hobgoblins for now though.

Jericho does indeed find a wand on Bulgan. He also notices a couple of other items that might be valuable...

Once Hiroki is no longer hungry, Rurak will take burning wood (at the non burning side) and ram it into Bulgans head.
Chanting: Mother earth take this purified evil soul and make a better one from his dust.

Then he turns and knees down in front of Hiroki:
Do you think revenge is ever healing once soul?
He starts weeping into Hirokis fur.

After about 5 minutes of not taking notice of anything around him, he pets Hiroki and asks him to lay down, while he is tending his own wounds (no magic left).

Then he will take a look at the prisoners and the other party memebers.

Talking to the other party memebers only:
We need to sleep in a save place, which is easy to defend. How about we let the hobgoblins go, that might cause the other pale dwarves enough trouble for a while.

As Jericho retrieves the wand, Bronwyn comments, Yes, that is the healing wand. There was a command word involved in activating it. I memorized it in case I could escape and capture the device. It sounded something like Irisv...

As Lorn frees the other human and elven women, they cluster in the north end of the chamber, giving a wide berth to Rurak and his ritual mutilation of Bulgan's corpse. Bronwyn reassures them, Do not be frightened. It is no worse than the foul torturer deserves!

She continues, Thank you for freeing us. I could take no more of that insane beast's inane questioning. I am not sure why he thought we could reveal the secrets of his plundered treasures, but he seemed to revel in causing us pain, even though we could give him no answers. I shudder to think what he was going to do with that cauldron of oil...

To Lorn, Tana, and Jericho, she says, I recognize you. You are the adventurers my father was honoring the very night I was taken. Are you now in his service? Please tell me he is nearby with an army of the Purple Dragons...

When Rurak mentions finding a safe place to rest, Bronwyn adds, I am not sure anywhere nearby is safe. While seen far fewer of the orcs and their pale dwarven leaders in these caverns than in the main citadel, there have been servants arriving here from time to time, bringing more plunder to this mad king. Would it not be best to attempt a retreat to wherever my father's army is encamped? If one of you can lend me a weapon, I can help defend these poor women.
OUT OF CHARACTER
It wasn't clear you'd made a decision about the hobgoblin and reptilewomen.

I added some detail to the map, hinting that there's a bit more to explore...

Rurak gets a glimpse of the chamber to the northeast on his way into the "office." He sees a number of crates and boxes in that chamber.

Once inside the office, Rurak sees that the table is strewn with papers and scrolls. A faint breeze of fresh air comes from the passage to the east.

Rurak will not trouble himself with reading. He just pushes all papers in the backpack, open in all drawers (with or without force, what ever it takes).
Then he heads back and lets everyone know that there seems to be another opening, because there is a light breeze.

Tana speaks to Bronwyn, I agree that getting you and the other unfortunates imprisoned here out of danger is the first priority. If you feel the strength to wield a weapon I am sure someone among us can lend a blade. Tana glances quickly at the rest of the party for someone who might provide a weapon to Bronwyn. Turning back to Bronwyn and looking at the other freed prisoners also, Quickly tell us what you know of these caves and your captors so that we might spirit you away from here safely. Also, have any of you communicated with the other prisoners here?, Tana glances at the lizardfolk and hobgoblins. Do you know why they are also kept in chains? Have you communicated with them at all?
OUT OF CHARACTER
Tana would seek some assurance that releasing these monstrous humanoids would not result in simply more violence or having them run straight to those who could sound the alarm.

Rurak grabs all the papers off the table, then returns to alert everyone that there is a possible exit through the office.

Bram moves to examine the crate and discovers a cave quite full of crates and treasure chests! Jericho comes up to whack him with the wand. The command word Bronwyn remembered works perfectly and Bram is healed. [healed 14 hp; for the record, this is a wand of cure moderate wounds, caster level 3, if you want to roll any healing for yourself]

Bram’s search of the crates and chests turns up quite a load of loot, some of which he recognizes. The treasure includes items that were carried on your horses or by your fallen comrades back during your disastrous run to Castle Defiant… but that’s not all! [a complete list of the treasure is in the OOC section below]

Bronwyn answers Tana, I know little of these caves beyond this chamber. We were brought here through a hidden pit from the fortress at the center of this ring of hills. Apparently, ‘king’ Bulgan wanted to question us away from the prying eyes of most of his kin. I suspect he was rather paranoid.

She continues, These other prisoners were brought with us. We have not been allowed to communicate, but I believe they are indeed captives, too. Bulgan tortured them, as well. He got even less information from them than from us, since no one could understand their language. That did not seem to stop him, though. He seemed to enjoy the screams of females of all races, regardless of whether they could answer his questions.
Share Spells (Ex)

At the druid’s option, she may have any spell (but not any spell-like ability) she casts upon herself also affect her animal companion. The animal companion must be within 5 feet of her at the time of casting to receive the benefit. If the spell or effect has a duration other than instantaneous, it stops affecting the animal companion if the companion moves farther than 5 feet away and will not affect the animal again, even if it returns to the druid before the duration expires.

Additionally, the druid may cast a spell with a target of "You" on her animal companion (as a touch range spell) instead of on herself. A druid and her animal companion can share spells even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of the companion’s type (animal).
Per the above, Hiroki only gets the shared benefit when Rurak casts a healing spell on himself.

Watching Rurak load up himself and Hiroki, Jericho stops him and says We do not want to overload ourselves. We are still in enemy territory and need our speed to get out safely.

Let me try to give you some healing from this wand as well Rurak. He will then give a whack to Rurak from the wand

OUT OF CHARACTER
I'm making some assumptions about what the party does next so that I can bring this episode to a conclusion...

Jericho heals Rurak and then himself (the latter seems appropriate given that Jericho is also seriously wounded). The party reaches a consensus that they should free the hobgoblin and reptilefolk women, even though they can't communicate with them, since they cannot, in good conscience, leave them here. The reptilefolk immediately flee into the caves. The hobgoblins argue briefly over who gets to take the axes of the fallen duergar, but then do the same.

Rurak loads himself up with most of the loot, pointing out that, since he's a dwarf, it won't slow him down any. For the remaining loot, the party discovers that it now has plenty of followers willing to help them carry whatever they need. Bronwyn reclaims her dagger from Rurak, explaining that she lost it during an escape attempt early on, back in Caithness. She also puts on the chain shirt that Rurak was going to leave behind, announcing that she is ready to aid the party in defending the rest of the prisoners, should the need arise.

The party, Bronwyn, and the freed women then follow the breezy passage leading from the office cave. They discover that it continues a long way and ultimately emerges in a thicket of bushes outside the ring of hills! Obviously, it was an emergency escape route for "King" Bulgan. Thus, there is no need for a harrowing climb over the hills while avoiding observation by the orc army. Guided by Bram's sense of direction, the fleeing group manages to make its way back across the Solfor Swamp and retrace the route back to Castle Defiant.

At Defiant, the party finds that Lord Kerin has not been idle. All damage done during the siege has been repaired and the garrison reinforced with conscripts from the surrounding lands. Furthermore, a large party of knights has arrived from Durham and Sterling. These knights report that there have been no further orc attacks on Caithness and, thus, Lords Peredur and Bruce sent their contingent to Defiant to gather information. They were joined on the way by three elves that some of you might recognize: Lyondel, Avaryon, and Artarne. So it turns out that there is much rejoicing at your party's arrival. Several of the human women you rescued from the lands around Defiant. The rest are from near Sterling or Durham. The elven prisoners are kinfolk to Lyondel, Avaryon, and Artarne.

With the elves and some of the knights, the party agrees to escort Bronwyn and the remaining prisoners across the desert and back to their homes in Caithness. The journey takes almost two months, but the group is now large and well armed enough that no danger presents itself on the way. The group (which perhaps unfairly includes the elves and knights) receives a heroes' welcome in Sterling and in the Sterlingwood. In Durham, however, Lord Peredur is overjoyed at the return of his daughter and under no illusions as to who did the heavy lifting. There is a great feast in honor of the surviving members of the party that set out so long ago... and their new ally, Rurak.

Yes, Rurak is able to find his horse near where he left it without much trouble. Fortunately, it was not eaten by orcs. This is convenient, as it means he is able to keep up with the rest of the party as they return to Defiant.
