The group of four make their way to Upper Menthis Plateau. Arriving at the tavern where they saw Grug drinking, the party enters to find the place empty. Asking about Grug, he emerges from a side room looking awefully unhappy. He approaches the group and says, "Hello Rain, Jear, Sunim. Where you three go? Who this guy?"

"We kinda got knocked off the platform. From there, it's one long story after another. This is Kirre. He's a friend. Are you alright, Grug?"

Rain has a genuine look of concern on his face.

Grug responds, "Grug ok. Rain ready to get Rain's money back?"

I noticed Catalyst online, so in the interest of moving the plot forward (rather than having post-by-post dialogue), I had a dialogue between him and Grug. This sets up the exposition that will allow for actual character interaction:

Rain: Of course I am, but we need to eat first. It' been a very long few days. Where did you disappear to, anyhow?
Grug: Grug helped out friend. Then friend offer to help Grug. Grug know where to go to get back Rain's money. Just need kill one halfling and Rain get all money back.
Rain: Uhm... Which halfling?
Grug: Bad halfling. Very corrupt. Very evil. Bad for Sharn. Bad for world. Name Ilyra Boromar.
Rain: Grug, you realize that the person you've been asked to kill in order to retrieve the money that was stolen belongs to the same clan the gold belongs, don't you?
Grug: Yes. That why we don't tell them.
Rain: *facepalms* Grug, this is a really, REALLY bad idea. And I'm sorry, but it's also suicide. Under normally circumstances, I'm all for people playing with their lives, however I just happen to be fond of you enough so much as to not see you at the long end of a spear.
Grug: Rain not understand. It not that difficult. Grug know where bad halfling will be. We kill bad halfling, Daask give money to pretty woman, pretty woman give money to us. Easy.
Rain: Who is this 'pretty woman', anyhow?
Grug: She Lady Il'yuendra
Rain: When did you meet her?
Grug: After Rain, Jear, and Sunim jump off balcony. She forgive Rain for stabbing her.
Rain: Hmm... I don't trust her. I am still opposed to the idea. There is a certain aspect, Grug, of my lifestyle, that all members adhere to. Honor amongst thieves. To betray a group that I have been working for continuiosly, regardless of whether or not my affiliation still holds, is dishonorable, and I cannot go through with it.
Grug: Why Rain not trust her?
Rain: For starters, she tried to kill us. Secondly, she tried to kill us. Third, she, I believe, was connected with the robbery that left our employers in a possition where they tried to kill us. Are you noticing the trend here?
Grug: She not try kill anyone. Krusk try kill us. Krusk bad. Jear thought Krusk ok because Krusk strong, but Krusk was Daask spy. Lady tell Grug truth. Why Rain say bad things about Lady?

From the side room where Grug originally emerged, the beautiful elven woman appears.

Lady Il'yuendra: Yes. Why does Rain say bad things about me?
Rain: Why can't I eat a meal in peace?
Lady Il'yuendra: I'm surprised to see you here! When I noticed that I was being watched, I assumed that one of my enemies was looking for me. I of course immediately ran to find my good friend Grug here to protect me! I feel much better knowing that it is a potential friend!
Rain: Phiarlan bitch! We'll never work with you! *Rain looks a little surprised at his own comment, then smiles*
Grug: Don't talk mean to Lady, Rain!

It is obvious that things are turning ugly.

After a few seconds of listening to the exchange, Jear reaches into the folds of his cloak, pulls out a flask, and begins to mutter under his breath about fate and witchcraft going hand in hand. He uncorks the top of the flask and peeks inside all the while still muttering. "Good thing Dwarfs like making Dwarven Spirits. Takes the edge off of tense situations." He takes a sniff, jerks his head back and wrinkles his nose. "Good stuff! But rank!" He apears to be talking to no one but just talking quietly to himself. He swirls it around preparing to take a drink. Just before he does, he promptly pours the contents onto Grug's boots, stepping back quickly in feigned shock. Everyone quickly recognizes that it was not spirits in the flask, but simple oil!

"Grug? I think you need take a seat. You look a little unsteady." (ooc) If I still have an action at this point, I want to toss a chair at his ankles, causing him to take a step and hopefully slip and lose his balance. (/ooc)
"Hey where did the thief go? He was standing right where that pile of goo is just a second ago... Uh Oh... There wasn't a pile of goo there a second ago. Dang it! We go through thieves like peasants through a dragon."

With no one else making any moves, I'll validate now.

Kirre stands around, not understanding what is happening.

As Jear pours the contents of flask of oil on Grug's shoe, the Ogre looks stunned for a moment, then looks at Jear and says, "Why Jear wanna make Grug mad?" His voice becomes harsh and angry as the magic from his belt seeps into him.

Sunim stands still, waiting to see what he should do next.

Rain casts a spell and as he does, auras surrounding Lady Il'yuendra crackle and shatter!

Jear grabs a chair and throws it at Grug. The giant easily keeps his balance (good try, though! Grug just got lucky there!).

Finally, one of the bar patrons stands up and says to Rain, "You'll want to back off from the Lady there before I lay you out, elf!"

The barkeep yells, "What in Xoriat is going on here?!? I'm calling the guards!"

Damn! I knew this was going to get ugly, and I still haven't even eaten.

Jerand, be careful. Grug is quite the worthy opponent. It looks like you broke the bitch's enchantments, too.

If this gets physical, let me through. I have a feeling I fare better in physical combat than you.

"..."

Kirre steps back to distance himself from the growing attention, but looking for anyone else in the room who may jump to the lady's side if things continue to rumble out of control.

Can I get a sense motives on the lady and grug? Does he appear to be acting under his own volition or under a spell of charm or the like?

If I think that she's controlling/influencing him magically, I will quickly move into attack range and try to lay her low with a flurry of blows.

Grug appears to be acting of his own volition as he charges Jear. He says, "Jear should have just left. Now I make Jear leave." He pushes Jear 30 feet!!! Jear is just about at the entrance to the bar!!! Kirre or Sunim may take attacks of opportunity against Grug, if they would like, as he passes them. Rain takes no action against Grug.

Rain just concentrates on figuring out what is going on.

The elf woman tries to calm things down. "Please, Grug, don't cause a fuss. We can discuss this civilly!" He takes no heed to her words.

The bar patron who yelled stands, along with one of his cronies, and they move to help Grug in escorting Jear out of the bar.

There are those knives in my back again, coming in droves. This is not a good situation and it looks as if it is about to become worse.

"Gentlemen, your involvement is appreciated but not really needed. Grug here is my friend. There is no need to make this physical Grug, you know you are stronger then I am" Jear stands up, holding his hands up in front of him and backing away from Grug towards the door.

"Even the Lady says this is not a good idea. None of us want to the guard here, cause then we all end up with problems." His hands will move to the handles of his swords "This is definately not the place to be dancing fellas. Kirre, Rain. Perhaps we should be moving along. Grug apparently does not want to be our friend anymore.'

"Hmm, yes it would seem so." he speaks with unerring calm and absolute composure. Kirre warily glances around, taking note of anyone attempting to further exacerbate an already (-potentially-) dangerous situation. He activates his Scout's Headband (Magic Item Compendium) with all three charges (Trueseeing) and looks again keeping tabs of those who display any change.
OUT OF CHARACTER
I will await the result of the Trueseeing effect before taking anymore actions

Sunny, any actions for Sunim?

Kirre draws his weapon, and steps 5ft.toward a wall, in an attempt to keep anyone from approaching him from behind.

He looks from the lady to Grug to Jear and Rain and then back to the lady trying to figure out what's going on...

Rain walks over to the woman and says, "So, my suspicion was right! You are not an elf, after all! I apologize for my anger. I dislike the dragonmarked houses. I won't be your manslave, demon! Nor will I corrupt the innocent on your behalf!"

Grug accepting Jear's surrender, notices Rain walking towards the lady and quickly rushes to her side while the two bar patrons block Jear's passage, trying to intimidate him into leaving.

The lady says, "Is my allegiance as clear to you as my identity, Rain?"
Rain looks confused, "No, that still escapes me."
The lady: My offer still stands! I can get your money back! All that is required is for one corrupt halfling to be taken care of!
Rain nods and says: And if we refuse?
The lady: Well, we already have plans for it, should you refuse.
Rain: How long do we have to figure it all out?
The lady: Until the ir'Tain gala.
Rain: We will think about it and get back to you! [internally]I'm a little tea cup, short and stout! Here is my handle, here is my spout! Rain don't think of anything, or I'll shout! Tip me over and pour me out!

Rain turns to leave, but before he can get away, the lady says, "Just one kiss before you go!" Unable to refrain, Rain walks right back and kisses her. As he leaves her embrace, several strands of grey hair can be seen [one negative level has been applied]. "Give me whatever you used to find me!" Rain quickly hands over his bloody sword. The lady says, "Thank you. If you wish to contact me, look for Grug. He will likely be here, in this very tavern. If not, I'm sure you have ways of locating someone you want to find!"

She disappears. After two minutes, Rain regains control of his body.

With Grug backing up to protect the lady, Jear looks at the 2 patrons standing before him. "Gentlemen, I believe that you will find that I will back away from Grug for obvious reasons but you 2 need to be careful." He gives them a wink and attempts to move over to where Kirre is.

Oh no, this is all wrong. just completely all wrong. Both Rain and Grug are now in cohoots with this lady. This is completely falling apart.

Would everyone post what they are thinking as part of their post? I need to see where this is going, so your characters thoughts on it are just as important as your actions.

Kirre continues moving to limit how many opponents he might have to fight at one time, trying to get a wall or two maybe even a window near him.

Friend or no, ally or enemy, I owe nothing to any of them...
If this turns ugly my axe is the only thing I can rely upon. I just came for answers and because of a common enemy and promises of retribution against K...

Well, I wish I could wait for Sunny, but I haven't seen him since I have been back to posting on a regular basis, so I will progress the campaign a little. Sunny, when you return, please post Sunim's reaction to all of this.

Before she leaves, she sends Kirre the mental message, You have nothing to fear from me. You can hardly fault me for the circumstances of my birth! I mean you no harm. I desire only to help you, and myself. Talk to Rain. He can fill you in! I promise, it will be most lucrative if you help him!

As the Lady leaves, Grug gives Jear a stern look, as intimidating as Jear has ever seen him, and says, "You say bad things about the Lady again, and you will be FEELING very bad things! Jear understand?" Grug heads over to Rain, "So Rain, we go get your money back now, right?"

Rain says, "Yeah! Definitely! I want to get my money back quickly! First, let me introduce you. This is Kirre. He is a new acquaintance of ours. You remember the big K? Well, Kirre here doesn't care much for him, either. I'm afraid we only have a few more hours before we are meeting him, so we don't have time to go after my money today. Perhaps after we meet up with K tomorrow morning we can look into it. You are still coming to the meeting, right?"

Grug nods, "Yeah, Grug go. But if Rain want money back, he should act soon. Offer not last too long. Like Lady said, only until ir'Tain gala!"

Rain says, "You are right. Listen, Jear, Kirre, and I will talk to some of our contacts about the halfling the Lady mentioned. Maybe by the time we meet tomorrow, we will have a plan of action. I would ask you to join, but you are rather... conspicuous."

Grug nods with a grunt.

Rain says, "Let's get going!"

At this point, Jerand is able to release control back to Rain.

Jerand, what are you doing? You've gotten us into an agreement to kill the head of the most powerful theives guild in Sharn... I really, really hope you have a plan. Really. Because if this goes bad, we're all dead, and considering your newfound sense of life, I'm pretty sure you don't want to be dead or dormant again.

I'm just trying to get the hell out of here! Grug isn't even under the demon's enchantment! He truly believes he is doing the right thing by helping her! The best thing we can do is get away from him and figure out what to do next!

We need to get out of here. It just isn't safe. Big K in the morning, This lady playing games with Rain and Grug's minds. Missing money. Damn birthmark.

"Oh yes, because I want a barroom brawl. Let's find a place to get some rest and we'll deal with K in the morning. I'm exhausted."

I really can't believe this. And all I wanted to do is make right by the world... Now I'm an official member of an assassin's guild, I'm hunted by the most powerful theives guild in the city, one of my friends has lost his mind. To hell with it, I'll kill the halfling, get the gold back, make a profit, and who knows, maybe start some training as an assassin. Honest work clearly does not suit me, as the world has shown. Oh, and let's not forget, we still have a quest to stop some sort of evil that we know NOTHING about! This is wonderful.

Grug remains behind, and as the group exits the bar, the bartender heaves a sigh of relief. He doesn't say it, but it seems obvious that the group is not entirely welcome back, although it is doubtful that he would do anything to stop them. When the group exits the bar, the last sliver of sunlight is just about dropping below the horizon. Rain leads the group through the city, taking mostly back alleys, until you arrive at an unaffiliated messenger station. These stations charge about a little less than House Sivis, but they are not nearly as reputable and tend to lack the security that the Dragonmarked House provides. If the rest of you have other business to attend to, that is fine, but otherwise, I assume you join him into the station. He hires a messenger to head to Thuranne d'Velderan's Investigative Services with a message, "Have you discovered what happened? The messenger should have your twenty gold payment. I would like proof that my name is clear. Please have it delivered to where I'm staying in the Boldrei's Hearth district. I'll be staying in Marquan's Rooms for Let. Please leave any correspondance with the landlord. --Rain Talayin" He pays for the message and attaches twenty gold.

Next, he leads everyone to Boldrei's Hearth where he finds a hole-in-the-wall tavern that he claims has an amazing chef and a secluded atmosphere. The small restaurant has eight tables, five of them full, and two back rooms, both empty. Rain drops a gold on the table and asks for the back room. He is quickly shown the way. Kirre notices that Rain seems to have a great deal of knowledge of the workings of Sharn, something that he himself greatly lacks. The back room, while a little cramped, is cozy. It also features a back door. Rain explains a little local legend that sixty years ago, this was a house, and the door led to a bedroom, but the bedroom collapsed during a fire, and the house was converted into this tavern. Now, the door provides a back way out, should trouble find them. Few people know the tavern is there, much less the door.

After dinner, the group heads to Marquan's Rooms for Let where Rain drops a gold and receives a key. He says that it is not much to look at, but it is now paid for a month, and it should provide them a secure place for the night. The location offers private rooms with a common dining room, but they will not likely be eating there, anyway.

I have described events that will lead to tomorrow morning, but conversation has been occurring throughout, so please, talk amongst yourselves and let me know when "tomorrow comes". Essentially, this is the time for information dissemination. Should the three active posters be able to get together using a chat program like AIM, I ask that one of you act as the recorder and save it, then convert it into a conversation to be read here on the forum. Should anyone know how to get in touch with Sunny, if he can be included, that would be awesome. Otherwise, I am going to try to find someone to replace him, unfortunately.
