This will be a core only(PHB) game. Starting level is 3. I will be going over specifics later on, this is estimated to start late March to April to give me time to have some details which will not just bore the hell out of you all.
The players will all be from the same general area(respective races are mostly segregated but amiable with each other) though all fall under the rule of one king, King Brendan Joss. The king is fair and just, taxes are low and he is looked upon highly by the townsfolk and the governments of each town.

The king has sent out couriers to each different town requesting the bravest adventurers in the land to undertake a mission. The king is ambitious and as such the majority of his army is waging war halfway across the continent and the remaining forces have to remain close to protect the castle and townspeople as best it can.

The game will start with an audience in front of the king...
That said, I would like character races/classes and a very short background, I will be choosing players from that and will then require a more detailed background.

Beor the Old, has never had any opportunities to distinguish himself as a great wizard. Over the years he has become more and more of a reculsive old man studying dusty tomes and researching all things arcane. Alas, he has made little progress in his solitude and has decided to venture forth in search of all the things that have eluded him in his years of isolation. Beor can be grumpy and disdainful of youth at times and must make a conscious effort not to be judgemental and can be very short with people especially those whose ideas differ from his own; he has much more tolerance for other spellcasters, who he sees as a resource for trading knowledge, if not for friendship.

Veil Brock a young human upstart Mage, abandoned at birth by his Mother left for dead on the side of the road in his own birth. Discovered by an Old Hermit and taken in fed goat’s milk as an infant. The old man passed on his scant knowledge Magic and herbology. Veil has come of age and feels the burning desire for Knowledge, of the arcane. He feels a great pull to magic he enjoys the way magic makes him feel when he uses it. Some times Magic is the only thing he feels he truly knows, but he realizes that what the Hermit has taught is only scratches the surface. The only way for him to advance and become more powerful is to leave the old man and go on his quest for Knowledge and Life. He seeks the thrill of Adventure and burning desire for knowledge. When Veil hears the news of his King searching for brave adventurers he sees an opportunity, to serve the King and for personal growth as well. Veil is an intelligent young man with the drive and desire to become something great! He seems to have a gentle spirit, not one to make rash decisions, and is passionate about his desires, and dreams.

Great start so far, hopefully we don't end up with a party full of mages lol. note, that is not intended to discourage anyone from playing the class they want.

Lyle Redbook, a kindly young human, always made his friends laugh. He enjoyed being the center of attention throughout his childhood. As he grew and started to venture out with his friends, he began to learn subtle ways that his jokes and laghter could boost his allies morale. He played to those abilities, cracking jokes about the creatures that his companions faced.

This is just a very base concept, but Lyle is a bard who uses comedy for his abilities.

Very brief - full 2 page background is available though. :)

Oweurd Sun Stone Earth Badgerfriend the Forest Gnome Druid

Oweurd is a druid on a mission to find a suitable place to plant new seeds. He is within his budding stage, and a part of that is become the keeper of a new grove. He traveled around the countryside, aiding farmers with their crops, and seeking the perfect land to make his new home. After 7 years of constantly disregarding a possible area due to trivial things like, not enough water, or too many stones, Oweurd finally found his perfect new settlement. Already gifted with beautiful trees that called to him in the breeze, he fell in love. He searched for the druid who managed this beautiful grove, but found none, only a few signs picketed into the ground: "His Highness, King Brendan Joss, decrees these lands as his personal, and private acres. Any persons found poaching will be subject to beheading, or torture."

Oweurd immediately set off to find said king, and instill in him manners for treating such a beautiful land as his own... and maybe to see if he can find a way to take it from him and set it free.

My first PBP game, so go easy on me if I get in... Haha.

B'Aith was born in a small hunting village. As a young lad, he was always fascinated with the way the older hunters could go out one morning and return that evening with a laugh and a veritable feast of killings. When he turned fourteen, his father, relented to the boy's constant pestering and took him out on a hunt. B'Aith was extremely happy and handled his bow nervously from his delight at being included. When the first boar broke free of the brush, the young lad shot an arrow at the creature and was delighted when it hit home, resting deeply in the beast's hindquarters.

Long story short, the boar got enraged and charged at the young lad. His brief life flashed before his eyes, quickly followed by his father. The giant pig mauled his father with it's great tusks before being killed by the other hunters. B'Aith never found out what he did wrong, all he knew was that the rest of his family blamed him for the death of his father. Two months further down the line, the young lad gave up on his village and left in the dead of night with only his bow and scant knowledge of the wilds to keep him occupied.

Three years later, a chance meeting with an official from the king's court sent the hunter hurrying to the centre of the kingdom. He wasn't overly sure of his reasons for doing so, but a chance to redeem himself should not be sniffed at.

B'Aith is a Chaotic Human Ranger. Outwardly, he is extremely friendly to everyone he meets, but people who meet him after he's been drinking or those that have known him for a long while can easily sense it is all a mere facade.

Andaril Audorwin
half-elf druid
neutral good

Andaril is the result of a daliance between a wealthy human merchant from the capital and an elf maiden he met while traveling through distant elven lands. Andaril spent his early years with his human father in the captial. As a boy, Andar (as his father called him) was instinctively interested in natural things, spending time with the pets of the neighborhood and in the house's garden. His father, however, insisted on sending him to business school, intending for Andar to take over the business at some future time.

His father died suddenly, leaving Andaril with a failing, debt-ladden business. All he could do was sell off the business and the house to pay the banks and give a small severance to the staff. He was surprised to receive an invitation to join his mother's family; an invitation which he accepted, as there was little else for a penniless half-elf adolescent to do in a mostly human city.

He instantly felt at home and began training as a druid, finally developing his innate talents with plants and animals. While at home with the elves, he was still aware, as was everyone else, that he was half human. The 'summons' from the king might be just what he needs to rediscover his human side and hopefully find his own unique place in the world.

I see that you say PhB is core, but my race is a gnome variant from the Monster Manual. I assumed that by core, you meant DMG, MM, and PHB... if this is a bad race... I suppose, let me know...

PhB, DMG and MM are core. I will look at each variant case by case, I would prefer classes only from the PHB, it was my fault for assuming everyone thought of it the same way I did. As long as there is no LA +- it will be ok as a variant of a race in the PHB.

Forest Gnome is ok.

Megdail has thirsted after knowledge from as far back as he can remember. Megdail's elven mother died in childbirth without identifying his father. Raised by an apothocary until he was six, Megdail received an early education in his letters and herbal remedies. Many have thought his resemblance to the king as a little too close for comfort. This drew the attention of one of the king's advisors who took Megdail under his wing and continued his training in art of backroom diplomacy. This mission is a final test for Megdail.

Prior Radulfus cleric of Wee Jas

Prior Radulfus has become well known for his funeral sermons, speaking beautifully of the deceased while placating the sense of loss in the families. He was honored greatly by being the second Prior out of 7 at the Lord Highness Brendan Joss', may he live eternally, second cousin, heir to the royal dukedom in Vertany, and recently deceased at the age of twelve from an accident. It was decided he would not be revived due to the traumatic experiences in his death.

It was here that he met the king and his noble advisors and was chosen, due to his powerful sermon and ability to comprehend the workings of both arcane and divine, to serve under Abbot Mondetelo in the royal castle. His ability to provide Wee Jas to the kingdom is coming, as Mondetelo is a cleric of Pelor, and will be dying soon. However, the Abbot, seeking a way to ensure Pelor remains as the standard to the King, has attempted to ensure that Radulfus will be joining an expedition the King is setting up...

Philo, the traveling monk of Fharlanghn

Philo runs... and he runs a lot. Growing up with his family of traveling salesmen, he would walk or trot alongside the carts, until eventually, he just kept going.

These days, Philo runs messages between towns, only charging what he needs to gamble, drink, and have a room for a night. Everyone knows that for messages you need to get somewhere cheaply and efficiently, Philo is the halfling to call. Ever since he won a ring in a bet from a wizard, he seems to have gotten better at it though... traveling almost 62 miles a day, even at night, though he does stick mainly to the roads.

Doing this has caused some conflicts now and then, where he had to fight, but mostly he just runs away, almost no one can catch him when he sprints.

Hearing the King's summons when visiting a town, he left, hoping to arrive in time... after all, who can turn down the prospect of better ale, better rooms, and maybe even a lady friend or two... or three... or maybe one per town in the surrounding countryside... or...

Karn Fiercefeet
Halfling Monk

This rather runt-like halfling is nothing what you'd expect from the start. He never held his races taste for jokes or pranks, and found that others' greed sad and pathetic. This difference drove him away from his clan. In his travels away from the clan, he met an elderly human who found the halfling's strange determination and sense of honor uplifting. That human was a monk named Kurai Dans, well past his prime and ready for death but never found a worthwhile student to pass on his knowledge and wisdom. Karn trained with Kurai for three years until his death. After which, he travelled abroad, meeting new people, experiencing life, and helping others. Despite his size, he has a strong heart, an indominable will, and a penchant for doing right by others, no matter the cost.

When he heard the call for adventurers, he answered to both be of assistance to a good king and to push his own abilities further.

Carlis was born of a human woman and an elven man, in a rural town. He grew up feeling at least as much in common with the animals and nature as he did with his fellow people, sometimes moreso. He was a naturally reserved young man, and not averse to solitude and quiet. He learned the ways of the wood and the bow, and the perfidy and cruelty of goblinkind. He grew into a determined, but basically kind Ranger, more at home in the woodlands than in a crowded dance hall. (Neutral Good Half Elf Ranger, Favored Enemy: Goblinoid, Combat specialty: Bow)

Frederik heaved the drunken man unceremoniously through the door, where he landed with a loud thud in the dirt outside the Tavern. Now that the rowdy crowd had calmed down with this further demonstration of his strength, he made his way back to the edge of the Bar.

The old barman approached Frederik, and handed him a small glass filled with a reddish liquid.
"Thanks, son", the older man said in a hushed tone, then moved away to serve clients.

Frederik nodded while slightly adjusting the short sword on his belt to a more comfortable position, again wondering why he carried the weapon in the first place. It was not like he could use it on the clients and it wasn't even his preferred weapon. After a few moment, his thoughts returned to that fateful day when he lost his partners. Well, they were more than partners. Frederik had shared many adventures with them and they even had been mildly successful in finding loot and killing Goblins.

Yet, they were all dead now. After all that time, he still was not sure why he had survived. The events of those days replayed in his head as if he could unlock the missing time. He remembered the Orc ambush that had taken them by surprise, and the immediate death of Melinda, the black haired sorceress. Orcish arrows seemed to have decided to visit her thin body all at the same time.

As in a nightmare, Frederik saw himself swinging his large sword and cutting down the Orcs as more of them surged through the bushes. But there were too many for him to intercept, and then he heard the death scream behind him. Porter, his closest friend, master unlocked of locked doors had been reduced to pulp by the Orcs. As if this wasn't bad enough, Karl, the steadfast ranger toppled in his face a few meters from him.

That is when something inside him broke. Try as he might, Frederik could not understand how this came to pass. He just flew in a fit of absolute Rage, hacking and slashing left and right. Only when no more Orcs showed sign of movement, did he stop, breathing heavily and covered in blood.

He knew it was over. And not only for the Orcs. Turning around, he confirmed that all those traveling with him were dead. Even the joyful Derick of Pelor was beyond his precious healing potions.

Frederik had taken the time to bury all his traveling companions, and even set the Orcs in a big pile which he torched with all the oil they had. He was not sure if any Orcs had fled or not. He had collected all the items that his companion called 'special' as he knew they would not require those in their ...

"You have not moved in at least 10 minutes. Are you ok Fred?" the old bartender asked him

Clearing his head, Frederik nodded, throwing a sad smile at his father.

"Listen Fred, I just heard something that might interest you", continued the barkeep, who also happened to be his Father.
"Something to get you out of here, and back on your feet. Fred, I love that you're here with me, but you can do better then kicking drunkards out of the family tavern! You see, the King has sent messengers and they said that ..."

I can see that. He doesn't make friends very easily, but this one seems likely, especially as they are both half elves.
