Wizard Spellbooks

Post by shai-hulud » Sun May 25, 2008 6:32 am

There are 913 wizard spells listed here: Spell Index. These spells take up 3744 pages. That is enough to nearly fill four Blessed Books. Rather than track spells gained, I would like to set a price, and any wizard can just take the whole package of spells and four Blessed Books. You can assume that any published spell is in one of those books.

I figure, at 50gp/page (the suggested price for copying a spell from another wizard's spellbook), it will cost 187,200gp in addition to the 12,500gpx4 for the Blessed Books. All told, that is 237,200gp for all of the spells in the spell list.

If you are a specialist wizard, you lose the spells from different specialties. Here are the relevant figures:
  • Abjuration
    • Number of Spells: 111
    • Number of Pages: 500
    • Cost of pages: 25,000gp
  • Conjuration
    • Number of Spells: 130
    • Number of Pages: 581
    • Cost of pages: 29,050gp
  • Enchantment
    • Number of Spells: 63
    • Number of Pages: 294
    • Cost of pages: 14,700gp
  • Evocation
    • Number of Spells: 130
    • Number of Pages: 504
    • Cost of pages: 25,200gp
  • Illusion
    • Number of Spells: 81
    • Number of Pages: 315
    • Cost of pages: 15,750gp
  • Necromancy
    • Number of Spells: 99
    • Number of Pages: 471
    • Cost of pages: 23,550gp
  • Transmutation
    • Number of Spells: 232
    • Number of Pages: 871
    • Cost of pages: 43,550gp
Does this seem fair?

Considering the starting gold for these 50th level characters,I think is very fair, or for 10x the gp give them an Epic Blessed Book, that holds all of the published spells in one book plus... something. :)

I like the idea of Epic Blessed Books. All those spells equate out to about 19 pages in the sheet though which can be a major pain to go through.

Does it make sense for a wizard to have every spell in his book? Why would a specialist have spells of opposed schools? Why would a LG wizard have CE spells?

Having all the spells in the known world wrapped up in only four books? Anyone else smell cheese?

A wizard is not an alignment-based caster. You are right about specialists not having spells of their prohibited schools, but why wouldn't a LG wizard have CE spells? He can use them for counterspelling, at the very least. Unless the LG wizard is Exalted, he is not at risk by using these spells, so why wouldn't he?
