Q and A

Post by patransom » Wed Jun 04, 2008 11:02 am

klaxkor asks: how do we know which of the custom skills are class/cross-class?

Answer: Read Language is a cross-class skill for everyone unless you take the Educated feat. Sail is a cross-class skill for everyone except the Skandik (or if we end up with a Common Avalonian or true Avalonian). The custom Knowledge skills are cross-class unless you are of a class that has all Knowledge skill as class skills (Bard, Wizard). The Knowledge: <Region> skills replace Knowledge: Local and would, therefore, be a class skill for Rogues... I think that's the only case that would require some further customization of the sheet. If you are a Rogue, you can just add your appropriate Knowledge: <Region> skill as a class skill using the Ability page. Let me know if you need help with that.

Post any and all other questions in this thread.

Question: For Casters, do we also have access to spell in the other Books as well? (i.e. other than the PHB)

Yes, PHB, PHBII, Complete Mage, Complete Scoundrel, Spell Compendium are all good (I think Spell Compendium covers all the other Complete and Races spells).

Would the Mariner class from Dragonlance: Age of Mortals be acceptable? I've had a look over it and it seems quite well suited to a Skandik without any of the usual Campaign specific details.

There isn't a class for it on the forums, but I can probably make one up. They rise in attack power as a Cleric/Rogue, have good Reflex and Fortitude saves, have a very limited version of Sneak Attack, gain bonus feats every 3-4 levels and have bonuses to some seafaring skills (which might include the new 'Sail' skill if you so choose)

I don't have that book, so it's hard to say. Need more details. Is it a base class or prestige class? What are the limitations on Sneak Attack? What is the list of bonus feats available? Which skills get bonuses, how often, and how big do they get?

Maybe the easiest thing to do would be to make up the class so I can look at it?

klaxkor sent me a pdf of the Mariner. It works fine for the setting and you can add Sail to the Mariner's class skills (not that it matters for a Skandik) and to the skill improved by the Seamanship class feature.

Why is deciding on which class to take so difficult?

hehe

Maybe because people didn't get a choice for race and ability scores, they're spending more time considering class? :)

I knew what I wanted to be right off the back from the ability scores alone. I had a problem with the direction I wanted to do with it.

Sweet!

I'll try and draw up a tos file for the Mariner. Don't exactly know how to do it, but I'm sure if I stumble around enough I'll get something sorted =P

Here you go: http://theonlysheet.com/community/viewt ... =31&t=5234

Easy class to create. It only took me more than a half hour because the dog wanted to go for a walk.

Question: Would Knowledge: Nautical be considered a class skill for the Mariner?

For the Educated feat, you gave a +1 to knowledge: All (as opposed to a +1 to 2 different knowledge skill).
Are you overriding that feat to make is more powerful, or do you want ppl to 'set' the proper knowledge skill in the custom feat section?

You are also giving one bonus Skill Point... is this a gift as well?

The skill point is Read Language since you gain the ability to read one of your languages.

Yes, I made the feat more powerful than in the source material (+1 to all knowledge checks and read language). Phoenix is right about the intent of the extra skill point, but I've since realized there is a better way to do it: make Read Language a use untrained skill and have the feat give +1 to it. Check out Rend Erasson's TOS sheet for how I changed it.

You can if you want. If it's too much for a hassle, I'll roll for you.

Pat,

If I am moving through using another character's area will I still take an AoO? Just wondering, thought that friendly squares would negate the giant's AoO.

Thanks.

No, friendly squares do not protect you from AoOs.

Also, remember that you can only charge in a straight line, so if you use Rend's square, you can't charge...
