Shipwrecked!

Like in real life, the circumstance of your birth are out of your control, but what you make of yourself after that is up to you. Welcome to the Wilderlands, where life is cheap, travel is dangerous and a strong sword arm is worth more than a purse full of gold!

In the morning Volgen wakes and, oddly enough seems to spend a moment in silent prayer. Afterwards he goes through a routine of packing up his gear, stretching, performing weapon drills, and exercises. Afterwards he joins the party.

Hela awakes a bit grumpy, clearly not accustomed to being without the luxuries of city life. She manages to shake it off pretty early though, and with a smile says [talk]I'd vote we head for where we think the lights are coming from. Frankly, its closer than the city and I'd love to find some sort of civilization. And if all else fails, they may be of some help guiding us in the right direction and warning us of local dangers[/talk]

[talk]Hmph.[/talk] Mire grunts. [talk]Flying is not natural.[/talk]

She shoulders her Greataxe and waits impatiently for everyone else to get ready.

The party breaks camp and turns west-northwest in the direction where they saw the lights, last night. Their progress, once they depart the obvious landmark of the coast, is a little slower, since, in the trackless plains, they need to use some care to remain on course.

You have not traveled very far, perhaps a half hour, when Domasa flies back from scouting ahead to report a curious sight. The party moves closer so that everyone can see what Domasa's found. Just ahead is a 40 foot deep crater with steep walls. At the bottom of the crater is a small castle: a keep surrounded by palisade walls with towers. The crater is so deep that even the towers are not visible above the rim. Of course, it makes no sense that anyone would build a castle at the bottom of a hole, so that its towers can't see out. Instead, it looks like some giant picked up the entire structure and dropped it from a great height, creating a huge divot when the castle landed. Except that the castle appears to be in perfect condition, having sustained no damage from its hypothetical crash landing.

The castle also appears to be completely deserted, although the gate through the outer curtain wall stands open. It is obviously not the source of the lights you saw last night. In addition to being deserted, it is much too close to your campsite. Furthermore, even if someone had lit a fire at this castle, you couldn't have seen it, given that the building's at the bottom of a crater.

[ooc]I realize it is impossible to read the grid numbers on the map. I wanted it so you can see the layout of the whole area. If a fight starts or something happens where the grid numbers become important, I will zoom it in so they are legible.

Key to the Map:
St = Straia Allan
V = Volgen Holdsson
D = Domasa Erawn (flying, invisible)
H = Hela Boatfoot
G = Gratchl
M = Mirena Aira
Se = Sefera Sotar (riding her horse, which is that brown blob)
W = Sefera's wolf[/ooc]

After listening to Domasa's report and now seeing it first hand Straia still can't believe it....[talk]How is this possible? Maybe we should investigate this further. Domasa did you see a way down?[/talk]

[ooc]There's no obvious way down, other than climbing. Or flying. Or falling. Climbing won't be too difficult, since the crater walls have plenty of handholds.[/ooc]

Volgen eyes the scene before him suspiciously. He was never fond of magic, oddly enough given his particular gifts and talents, but nevertheless he'd just as soon handle things with his brawn, and oddly enough once again, his wits. But he preferred to keep that later part about the wits a secret. He had heard of ruins being uncovered from the earth by scholars during his travels but, all those tales spoke of them being...well...ruined. He was wary but, his natural curiosity and adventurous nature was getting the better of him.

He immediately began looking for a way down, once he spotted one he moved to that point and looked to the others. [talk]I'm ready should we seek to explore it.[/talk]

[talk]At night we would be at a disadvantage. I cannot see in the dark and carrying a light source in the dark halls of a castle would only serve to make us prime ambush targets.[/talk]

[ooc]To further clarify: this building was absolutely not the source of the lights last night. Nor were the lights "around this place." The lights were on the top of the hills at least 10 miles from here.[/ooc]

Straia is taken aback about all the concern about lights, and looks to the hole in the ground and off to the hill in the distance...[talk]Where you maybe sampling some fermented sauce this morning?[/talk] then pointing off to the hills in the distance[talk]The lights came from those hills in the distance, not this hole in the ground.[/talk] Before anyone can say something again Straia says.........[talk]So what we have here is a decision to make, we so to speak have a bird in hand right in front of us, or a bird in the bush of in the distance there........I say we take the bird in hand.[/talk]

Volgen nods approvingly at Straia and her statements. He then looks to Mire and nods to her, his signal that he's up for going down whenever she is ready.

Gratchl looks about for a bird, and then mumbles as she did on the boat. All you think she might of said was something about a dog climbing these walls, but you are not sure if that is what she said or not.

[ooc]The climb down the crater walls is DC10. This is a problem for Gratchl (at -2). It is impossible for Spook the Horse. It is not a problem for Sparky the Dog (who I realize I forgot again) or Dorrian the Wolf or any of the other PCs.[/ooc]

Straia appears to be in a trance as she tries to remember anything about this place from her studies at the the Temple, or the tales that Dolgen had told her. Unconsciously Straia has removed her Ring of Sustenance and replaced it with Dolgrin's Ring.
