Setting and starting scenario

Post by patransom »

Shah Leayh, who rules Thygamus Province in the northwest part of the Viridian Empire from the provincial capital at Tak Shire, has sent out a discreet call for adventurers who can come to his aid. Quiet rumors suggest that the Shah's 10 year-old son, Amon, is missing ...

Given this starting scenario, PC's could be from anywhere in Perearth. They could be typical adventurers who have come to Tak Shire because of the reward offered by the Shah (either individuals or a group who has travelled together for some time, I leave that to you to work out if you want). They could be in the service of the Shah already or in the service of other Viridian nobles. They could be members of the Shah's family, seeking to help their relative. I leave that up to each of you.

The following additional background is from the perspective of a typical Viridian. The important known lands of Perearth are:

The Viridian Empire: The cradle of civilization and enlightement on Perearth, at least if you ask any of it's citizens. The Emperor and the Shahs of the various provinces rule with an iron fist using legions of warriors and outright wizardry. The people of the Empire are rigidly divided by social class, although moving up in class is possible, though, with enough money and power. Amongst the nobles, pecking order is sometimes determined by who can claim the most "True Viridian" blood in their family tree. This often degenerates into arguments over whose skin has the greenest tint. The Emperor and Empress are the only known pure-blooded True Viridians, of course, which is obvious from their longevity. They have ruled the empire for generations.

Caithness: A loose, feudal confederation of lords to the west of the empire, ruled by a king. The important people there seem to spend much of their time riding around on horseback in heavy armor. (Much more information on Caithness, and the world from their perspective, can be found here: http://theonlysheet.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1152)

Tharbria: Barbarian lands to the north of the empire. The tribal peoples there would have been conquered long ago, if there were anything in their lands of interest to the empire. They are illiterate, violent, and uncivilized.

The Isle of Kelt: A mysterious, wild, and forested island north of Caithness rumored to be ruled by Druids, peopled with elves and fierce cudgel-wielding men.

The Sea Barons: A bunch of pirates, who call themselves nobility, who "rule" various islands in the Inner Sea. Although the empire has little in the way of a navy, the Emperor manages to keep their disruption of trade along the coast of the empire to a minimum.

The Desert Kingdoms: South of the inner sea and also bordering the empire on the east is a vast desert wasteland. There are people there, strange people, with odd beliefs. There has been a small influx of these people into the empire from the east of late. They have come to trade for civilized goods, of course.

Some info on races in the empire:

Humans are the rulers of the empire, of course, and the most sophisticated of the races, especially those with true Viridian blood.

Gnomes are quite integrated into Viridian society, as their magical and inventive skills are very valuable.

Halflings have a few towns of their own within the empire and can be found travelling throughout. They are an amusing little race.

Dwarves routinely come into the empire from the Zarak mountains to the west and other ranges to the northeast. Many are imployed in the imperial mines on Gheulost Island.

The only significant population of elves in the empire is found in the Elsenwood in the central part of the empire. They keep to themselves, although it's rumored they have been stirring up trouble lately, and imperial forces are always watchful for their plots.

Very few humans would admit to having partial elvish or orcish blood. But it's obvious there are unfortunate individuals around with that flaw.[/url]
