Religion in the Viridian Empire

Post by patransom »

The two major religions in the empire are:

The Mer Shunna: followers of Armadad Bog (LE), god of ocean depths, death, and elemental water. The Emperor himself is also the God-Priest of Armadad Bog, and, thus, the human sacrifices demanded by Bog are an accepted part of life in the Empire.

The Natchai: followers of Natch-Ur (NE), god of deep earth, caverns, elemental earth, and secret power (especially magical power). Previous Emperors have been Natchai, so this religion retains an important place in society.

Also accepted, but less important, are:

The Seekers of Joy: worshippers of Tama Hama (CN), goddess of passion, hedonism, and illusion.

The Seekers of Health: followers of Ugtargnt (CN), two-headed god of health and disease.

The Tempters of the Spider Goddess: followers of Nepthtlys (LN), goddess of wealth, commerce, and fate.

The Shang-Tal: followers of Shang Ta (N), god of the sky, elemental air, fog, and dreams.

The Gnosophim: followers of Thoth (N), god of knowledge.

The Sekerites: followers of Seker (NG), god of light, good, destruction of evil, and flame.

Shrines to Anubis, Guardian of the Dead, are common, although there are few "followers." And the recent immigrants from the Desert Kingdoms have been heard speaking of their own mysterious god on occassion, although such blasphemy is severely punished in some parts of the empire.

Other deities are also worshipped in the empire, including some of those posted here: http://theonlysheet.com/forum/viewtopic ... e808ef1f3b, plus a few others. Few citizens of the empire admit to worshipping these gods, because most of the established religions are not tolerant of worshipping these "outsider" gods.
