Player's Guide to Play-By-Post gaming!

Post by admin »

This thread is meant to be a Guide to players of PbP, a repository of tips and trick to get you up to speed on how to game in PbPs. If you have a tip to add, just post it here!

WRITING for a PbP
When you write your message for a PbP post, there are MANY useful (and standard!) ways to get your character to talk, yell and even whisper.
To do this, simply write a line of test, highlight it with your mouse, and use one of the above buttons: TALK, THINK, WHISPER or YELL.
  • SPOILER: The spoiler button allows you to 'hide' text behind a button which needs to be clicked to view. (more help)
  • OCC: the ooc (Out Of Character) button is for text you are saying as a player (i.e. not your character) (more help)
  • AE: The ae button is very useful to get a block of text for Active Effects - where you can easily track the spells you have active on your character, number of uses of an ability you have left and such
  • S: The s button is used to place a strike through text - very useful to denote spells that you have used!
  • LIST: The list button makes for lists just like this one; you can use [ * ] (no spaces) to denote the bullet.
Tokens for your Characters
Some PbP DMs will ask you for a token of your character to use on Maps. You can either use an existing token, or, if you already have a cool image for your character, you can just make a Token using that image.

Steps to Create a Token from an Existing image
a) Go to this page
b) Click on the Token Tool (in the Dev column) and start that Java application on your PC (allow the Java application to start!)
c) Once the Java application is running, just drag&drop your image in it
d) Select your outline, and the size of your token (make it look good for you!)
e) Save your token, and post in with your character on the Forum!

Where to find an Existing Token
  • http://gallery.rptools.net/v/contrib/ Is one source for already made tokens. Any image saved as a png file with transparency on will make a good token. Make it large (128x128 or bigger) as it's easier to reduce than increase for maps.{Duniagdra}
Rolling dice using BBCodes
You can roll dice directly in the forum or use an external site (depending on your Game Master). The DICE code is used to roll Dice. Note that if you use the PREVIEW button with a post that you used the DICE code, the forum WILL give you the result in the preview pane, but the dice code in your text will have been replaced by an internal code used by the system. Don't change/or play with this code!! For more information about the included die roller, check here.
