Three Faces of Evil: Finale

Post by patransom »

Lola provides some healing [everyone healed 20 hp], then the party conducts a thorough search of the Faceless One's body, his minons' corpses, and the areas through which the battle raged. Here's what they find:

On the Faceless One:
  • A rod (which you will clearly suspect is magical, based on how he used it)
  • A potion
  • An ordinary dagger
  • 48 gp
On the Acolytes:
  • A variety of potions (2 of one kind, 2 of another kind, 2 of yet another kind, and 4 of a fourth kind)
  • Some scrolls (2 of one kind, 4 of another)
  • Four more ordinary daggers
  • 192 gp
In the storage chamber (Area 1 on the map):
  • The missing cart in which you had stored all your loot (see here)
  • A variety of food, water, and other mundane items, all in crates marked with the symbol of your employer, Balabar Smenk
Upon the altar in the Inner Sanctum (Area 2):
  • Two golden goblets (100 gp each)
  • A bronze sacrificial dagger set with blood red rubies (400 gp)
In the Bedroom (Area 3):
  • Four spellbooks
In the Laboratory (Area 4):
  • Enough beakers, tubes, and other glassware to constitute an alchemist's toolkit
  • Two vials of acid
  • Three vials of alchemist's fire
  • A vial of very unusual ink
  • A very nice cloak
  • A very nice heavy steel shield
  • A spellbook
  • 6 garnets (50 gp each)
  • 200 gp
  • A book that is clearly the key to decipher some kind of code
  • A very ancient book with a six-armed monster on the cover (see picture below), written in a language unfamiliar to any of you
This very thorough search takes about 6 minutes, during which you hear no more ominous noises, although you have a suspicion that the DM is keeping track of time for a reason...

What should we do? From that sound I don't think here is a good place to rest and if from his words, Marcus points to the body of the Faceless One, and that noise we heard. I'm thinking we may not have the luxury to rest. I would love to take time to renew my spells and recover from this battle. I can also take the time to detect and identify everything that might be magical.

OUT OF CHARACTER
If Marcus wants to try identifying any magic items, it will take 3 rounds initially to figure out what's magic, then 3 more rounds per item.

The scrolls would just take one casting of read magic.

Worrel will mutter a prayer to Mitra for guidance, then turn his gaze upon the collected items.

Mitra has granted me the ability to detect evil, so I shall.

Does the potion retrieved from the Faceless One match any of those from the acolytes in appearance? Those are likely healing draughts, I should think.

Worrel does not detect evil on any of the objects. Marcus casts read magic (for the scrolls) and detect magic (for everything else) and studies the loot. His results are hindered a little by the effects of the Faceless One's idiocy spell, but he is still able to produce some useful information (and he can try again once the spell wears off, but that will be a little while yet):

Identified magic items:
  • 1x potion of cure light wounds
  • 2x potions of protection from arrows
  • 2x potions of shield of faith (+3)
  • 2x scrolls of scorching ray
  • 4x scrolls of web
  • Cloak of resistance +2
  • Magical ink that makes writing invisible until read magic is cast upon it (I wonder if you found anything earlier in your adventures that might have been written with this?)
Unidentified magic items:
  • A rod (strong aura of no particular school)
  • 2x potions (faint transmutation)
  • 4x potions (moderate transmutation)
  • A magical heavy steel shield (moderate abjuration and moderate evocation)
  • A very ancient book with a six-armed monster on the cover, written in a language unfamiliar to any of you (strong divination, abjuration, and conjuration: calling)
Non-magical items:
  • 5x daggers
  • 440 gp
  • The missing cart in which you had stored all your loot (and the loot's still there, some of it magical, see here)
  • A variety of food, water, and other mundane items, all in crates marked with the symbol of your employer, Balabar Smenk
  • Two golden goblets (100 gp each)
  • A bronze sacrificial dagger set with blood red rubies (400 gp)
  • Five spellbooks
  • Enough beakers, tubes, and other glassware to constitute an alchemist's toolkit
  • Two vials of acid
  • Three vials of alchemist's fire
  • 6 garnets (50 gp each)
  • A book that is clearly the key to decipher some kind of code
This examination takes just a little more than 4 minutes. Still no more ominous sounds, but obviously the DM's still keeping track...

Worrel greets Prost. A lot of things happened. Mainly, beating what might have been the leader of these cultists.

Worrel then moves and looks at the collected material and the cart, trying to determine how much more material can be piled on before it becomes overloaded. He then start loading the new loot, starting with the heavy items.

Not sure if we can get these crates on, but we should tell Master Smenk.

Perhaps we should rest in the quarters of our late foes, Cyrius suggests. There only seem to be three ways in, and at least two of 'em are hidden. Maybe we can bar or barricade them.

True. And I have already checked for lingering traces of evil and did not find any, so it should be safe to remain here. Unless we hear more rumbling, or whatever it was. That would be reason to leave these tunnels, states Worrel.

Several of the party grab items from the pile (indicated below). The rest of the valuables get piled in the wagon for eventual distribution or sale.

While the group discusses resting, Marcus casts Read Magic upon the blank scrolls he's been carrying all this time. Symbols appear on the page, but they appear to be some kind of code. Remembering the code book they just found, Marcus sets to work decoding. This process takes about five minutes, but soon enough he manages to translate an ominous message:

As Marcus shows the decoded information to his friends, a loud roar and crash echoes through the labyrinth, seeming to come from the Dark Cathedral through which you entered this place. It seems, perhaps, time has run out?

  • 2x potions of protection from arrows

  • 2x scrolls of scorching ray {Marcus}

  • Three vials of alchemist's fire {one to Cyrius}
  • 6 garnets (50 gp each)

I didn't notice at first that I was showing Microsoft Word's autocorrect underlining in my picture of that scroll, but I kind of like the emphasis it adds, so I'll keep it.

Let me know if the font is too hard to read. I can cut and paste the text into the thread.

Seems we have no choice. My spells are low. I think we confront this new foe head on. for what it says, he's not all he could be yet. Just a shadow of his true self.
Marcus prepares to leave the chamber once all are ready. He'll take position third in line.
Might be best for our fighters to lead? Use up whats left of the healing potions so we are at full strength. Those who need most healing go first.

Can I also use the potions that provide protection?

OUT OF CHARACTER
I distributed the healings to whoever was most wounded when the spell was cast. Hope that's okay.

Worrel takes the potion of cure light wounds [healed 8 hp]. Lola uses the last two charges of the wand [4 hp to Cyrius, 5 hp to Worrel], then uses three of her first level spells for healing as well [10 hp to Cyrius, 8 hp to Tex, 12 hp to Worrel].

A few party members grab a few more items. This includes Worrel returning a weaker cloak to the pile and Tex grabbing a potion of protection from arrows. He also comments, Maybe whoever's going to be fighting in front ought to take that other shield of faith potion...

As this goes on, there is more roaring and crashing from the Dark Cathedral. It sounds like something made of wood is being smashed to bits.

Since no one else took the last potions of protection from arrows or the shield of faith (if they stack that is), Lola will grab them both. She will also take the cloak of resistance. Again, this is just if no one else wants them.

Just before going into the cathedral, Lola makes sure her crossbow is loaded and ready and then will cast Bless.

Cyrius will lead the way back to the Dark Cathedral, hoping the noise is nothing more than a disgruntled dire rat being obstreperous...
