LoF: The Carrion King; Below the Old Monastery

The wishes unleashed over the ages by two genies have warped the Pale Mountain region to keep alive both a terrible beast and a heroic protector. These wishes have subtly warped the weave of the world to put a handful of adventurers on a trail to Kelmarane. It is these adventurers who will tread the path of fate at its most treacherous juncture, and it is they who will ultimately chart the course of history.

You all continue down to the next intersection and find more of the same, death. Ox finds nothing of alarm or interest, but Kroft finds Buried under a jumble of bones at the end of this passage a small teak box emblazoned with the holy symbol of Sarenrae. The box contains a wooden holy symbol of Sarenrae suspended from a silver chain and a brooch. Finding nothing more of note, you all now stand in front of a locked door. Erin and Kroft are now at the door.

Only that that was the last token I touched before exporting the map from MT. Most of the times, I remember to click off a token to get rid of that.

That would be my area of expertise. With a small amount of 'dramatic' flare, Kroft brandishes his own set of tools. In an instant, his face returns to its normal serious visage. Why don't you see if you hear anything while I work on the lock.

With almost no effort at all, Kroft plies his trade and hears a click as the mechanism inside gives way to his finesse, unlocking the door. Kroft twirls his picks with some flourish and puts them away.

You have to show me one day how you do that!
Erin looks at the door and and listens
shhht... everybody silence, i'm trying to hear if there is something on the other side!
she concentrates perception (1d20+7=26) if there is anything dangerous behind the door and she also looks for traps at the door (trapfinding+1=27)

Erin notes that she hears little of nothing on the other side. She also points out that this door seems rotted, it's banding and hinges rusting.

Erin opens the door and parts of it flake off, The rusting hinges creek and crack until the door is fully opened into a large room. This chamber seems to be an enormous laboratory. Against the north and south walls are two identical daises raised about five feet from the laboratory floor, each accessed by a wide set of curved stairs. Atop the south dais is a wide workbench covered in a bewildering series of glass beakers, tubes, alembics, athanors, and other alchemical tools. Some of these containers are filled with a murky green substance.

A massive mold-encrusted basalt table dominates the entrance of the room, flanked by two small tables to the east and west containing surgical tools and sheaves of old parchment. The walls of the subterranean lab were clearly fashioned from the living rock under the monastery, but carefully cut mold-encrusted tiles line the floor, interrupted occasionally by metal drains the size of dinner plates.

In the west wall further down is a flight of stairs leading up. You notice that mold is growing there.

Erin moves carefully forward to AI 14 paying attention to traps and also carefully checking around corners.... remembering the prokupine experience in the beginning...
“Kroft, lets check the room for traps...”
and to the others “wait here a moment! we check if its safe!”

Erin enters the room and, though there's the smell of old moldy stale air, she finds nothing that alarms her. When she reaches the stairs in the west wall, she realizes that these stairs are likely the same she saw before, with all the fungi growing. on the north dais she sees the same set up as on the south dais.

Noticing the lact of bodies or bones, It certainly does not appear the fighting got here. Kroft moves carefully up the stairs toward the end of the nearest dias (AF 16). His tread is slow and light as he tries to avoid the worst of the mold colonies. I wonder where the moisture is coming from? Is it wetter over there, Erin? He than takes closer look at the workspace.

Yes, you're on the north dais. You notice nothing special other than what's visibly apparent.

You may be right. I wonder what kind of research they would have been doing here? Kroft makes his way to the other dias, trying to avoid stepping in any more of the mold. He looks over the varrious vials, without touching anything, but can't make any sense of all the substances.
Perception (1d20+4=7)
Anyone have any knowledge of alchemy? I'm curious about what this stuff is.

Erin finds the floor near the stairs very well coated in the fingi that she saw when back in room 18 above. She finds nothing else than what has been pointed out.

Simi's senses do not put him at alarm.

Kroft is not getting much from what he sees and hears.

Dashki enters the room looking about. Is there anyone experienced in arcana that might determine what this is?

The only obvious ways in or out of this room is the door you entered from and the stairs in the west wall, which I've mentioned several times.

Just as Ox enters the lab there's a sudden burst.

Surprise Round

Slime Molds
From the two workbenches, the odd liquid breaks free from the beakers and tubes and other such things and pour to the floor. The liquids seem to flow with purpose as they each attack Simi and Kroft. Slam Attack/Damage vs Simi and Kroft (Flat-footed) (1d20-3=7, 1d6-3=3, 1d20-3=5, 1d6-3=2) Both Simi and Kroft are able to avoid the things attacking them with relative ease.

Round 1
    Initiative:
  1. Laron Jilliet
  2. Ox
  3. Hrashin
  4. Kroft Gypsum
  5. Simi
  6. Erin Ookapala
  7. Dashki
  8. Slime Mold

A curse can be heard from Kroft as he twists away from the attack. Now we know what's not right about this place. Though he expects his thin blade to have little effect on the creature, he still slashes out at it.

He then backs away from the thing a bit, moving toward the stairs (to AJ14).
