New Business at Last

Geographically, Perearth is a world with some remarkable similarities to our own. But the similarities end there.

New Business at Last

Rumors of War

There have been no further Orc raids since your return to Durham. It seems that, by “cutting off the head,” you dealt a serious blow to the Orcish menace. Word from Castle Defiant is that the knights there, reinforced by forces from Caithness proper, now have the Orcs well contained. Without their Duergar leader, the Orcs have returned to tribal infighting and can mount no organized threat.

More troubling, however, are the papers you recovered from “King” Bulgan’s lair. They included a number of communications written in Undercommon and High Viridian. Lord Peredur’s advisor, Yinta the gnome, has translated these (with some assistance from Tana) and they reveal much of the story behind recent events. It seems that Bulgan and his Duergar kin were able to unite the Orcs and threaten Defiant only because of support and assistance from some other faction in the depths of the earth (the Underdark). The letters suggest that this faction was the matriarchal forces of the Dark Elves, or Drow. The Drow assisted Bulgan only grudgingly, because Drow and Duergar are more often enemies than allies, and Bulgan was particularly misogynistic, leading to conflict with the female leaders of the Drow. The Drow provided aid to Bulgan and the Orcs only because of the urging of a third party, who, it appears, was none other than the Emperor of Viridistan himself! In fact, it is the letters written in High Viridian that provide the suggestion that Bulgan extend his raids beyond Defiant into Caithness. The Viridian letters specifically instruct Bulgan to capture and torture the “fair maidens of Caithness,” instructions it appears Bulgan was only too happy to follow.

You might recall that during the previous adventure, the PCs recovered evidence suggesting Viridians were also behind the plot to start a plague in Duvik’s Pass. Putting this evidence together with the letters recovered from Bulgan leads Lord Peredur to believe that there is a concerted Viridian effort to stir up trouble for Caithness. He is pretty angry about it, but there is little one Lord can do against the might of the entire Viridian Empire. In an effort to raise the state of alert in Caithness, all of the evidence has been sent to the attention of the King in the capital city of Carrick. Of course, there’s some oddity about all of this. The targets of these plots are not particularly strategic: “fair maidens” and a rather unimportant mining town. There’s been no massing of Viridian troops along the border. It seems more like a campaign of terror than preparation for a serious military conflict, so there’s uncertainty as to what, if anything, the King and the other Lords of Caithness will do about it.

You know most of this information because you were responsible for uncovering the evidence. You also are now privy to Lord Peredur’s private counsels. The details of the two plots are not common knowledge. However, rumors have slipped out. There is gossip amongst the common folk about an impending war with Viridistan and a general increase in anti-Viridian sentiment. There’s nothing the PCs, as individuals, are being requested to do about any of this, of course. And, it would seem, this is all unrelated to your next adventure, which begins below…

Recent Activities

Since returning to Durham, the party has mostly gone it’s separate ways. Sir Bram has taken to Knighthood quite well, is very busy managing a small estate, and has involved himself in the matters of court. There’s a rumor he’s making a bid for the hand of Bronwyn herself. You haven’t seen him much. Jericho, with the support of Lord Peredur, has started a shrine to the foreign god Ugtargnt and even attracted a small following. However, with the rising anti-Viridian sentiment, he hasn’t been seen much outside his new church. Sir Lorn has taken Knighthood as more of an honorary title than Bram. He’s been busy consulting with Lady Andolyn and copying spells from her spellbook. One side benefit of recent adventures, however, is that he is allowed free food and drink at a local inn, the Bear’s Den. The owner, “Bear,” is a former adventurer himself. He made this offer to Lorn and all of the heroes because having famous people at his establishment stirs up business from the common folk. Lorn frequently takes advantage of this and is doing so this evening. Sister Tana has been teaching at the Monastery of St. Cuthbert outside of Durham. In spite of her initial excitement, she might be getting a bit bored of this, though. She often comes to town on some errand or another and, on this particular evening, has decided to join Lorn for a free meal at the Bear’s Den. Rurak has been wandering the woods and fields around Durham. He isn’t seen in town frequently, but when he comes in, he always stops off for a free drink at the Bear’s Den…

This Evening

Sister Tana and Lorn (and possibly Rurak, if he posts) are enjoying a free meal at the Bear’s Den and, perhaps, reliving old adventures (remember that Caustigus creature? What was that thing, anyway?). “Bear” is pleased because the presence of two (or three) heroes on one night has drawn a nice crowd of paying customers. This crowd is not disturbing our heroes, only admiring them from afar. Lorn, being a wizard, is regarded as rather scary and Tana’s stern demeanor keeps people without serious business to discuss at bay.

At the end of the meal, however, one person does approach your table. He is a tall, tanned fellow with short brown hair. He introduces himself as Alodar Teareye and says he is carrying a letter from Caladar the Silent. He hands this letter to Lorn and Tana and awaits a response. The text of the letter is as follows:

To Sunny, Jase, Lorn, Kolan, Tana, Jericho, and Yasmin,

Greetings, friends and boon companions! Rumor has reached me here in Duvik’s Pass that you have had great adventures since we parted and that you were instrumental in the rescue of our Lord Peredur’s beautiful daughter from the Orclands. I congratulate you on your triumphs and remember fondly our similar, albeit lesser, achievement in freeing Duvik’s Pass from the grips of the Burning Plague.

As you may recall, I have settled into the quiet life here in the Pass. Fearsome adventures are no longer for me, but I have met with some success in simple trade. It is because of my business ventures that I am contacting you.

For some time now, I have been awaiting the arrival of a rare and valuable cargo in which I invested a considerable portion of my meager resources. This cargo was meant to arrive via ship in the port of Simonton more than a month ago. Alas, I have received no word from my agent at the port. Messengers I have sent to Simonton have all failed to return. Rumors from that region speak of increased banditry and piracy. I fear for the loss of my investment in this cargo, for the fate of my partners in trade, my messengers, and even for the lives of the poor sailors who were transporting my goods.

Therefore, I must call upon you for a favor. Could you find it in your hearts to assist an old friend and investigate this matter? I ask only that you travel with my employee, Alodar, who brought you this letter, to Simonton and assist him in looking into the fate of my cargo. Given the disappearance of my other agents, I fear he will need the protection and assistance of stout-hearted adventurers to have any hope of success.

Your friend and former comrade-in-arms,

Caladar the Silent

 OUT-OF-CHARACTER:
The characters, of course, would remember Caladar from their very first adventure (although the current players might not).

Alodar Teareye is klaxkor’s new character, so you should ask him for further details about Caladar’s request.

It remains to be seen whether Rurak is really continuing. If he posts here in the next week, he obviously is. If not, we will assume he is not present at the inn. In that case, the party might consider recruiting a new member before departing on any adventures. Because every adventuring party needs a cleric or a druid, right?

Tana looks up from reading the note, taking a quick glance at Lorn to see if his face registers a receptive attitude towards Caladar's request. Turning to Alodar, You must be Alodar. A proper introduction seems in order. I am Sister Tana Lattia, and this is Sir Lorn. Please join us and have a seat. I am interested to hear any news you might have from Duvik's Pass and of course, what your employer, our old firend Caladar, is up to these days.

Tana has no reason to think anything is amiss but she does quickly examine the note for anything unusual and listens to "Alodar's" response hoping to hear something to reassure her the person delivering the note knew Caladar, and travelled from Duvik's Pass with it.

Yes I am maam. Alodar Teareye at your service. Thank you for allowing me a seat. Alodar smiles, takes a chair, turns it around and sits backwards on the chair.

I am normally just a messenger, currently running messages for Caladar to this place or that. Normally between Duvik's Pass and here. His little business is doing quite well and I think that he could easily expand it to other towns once he has more financial backing. Kinda why I stick with running messages for just him these days. I figure if I become important to him, maybe if he does expand to other cities I could look after one of his shops instead of just running messages. Eventually these bones will get old and my messages won't get through.

Alodar unconsciously picks at his teeth with a toothpick As far as Duvik's Pass. The town is finally recovering from the burning sickness that ran through the town. Many thanks were given to you folks and to the travelling performers that stopped into the town. Personally, I was lucky to have missed it, being here in Durham when it broke out.

Taking the note from Tana, Lorn reads it again whilst Alodar is answering her questions. After finishing, he raises his head to the bar Bear! Another round for us and our new friend, if you would! Leaving that to happen, he turns back to Alodar. I've got to say, I'm interested in helping. The quiet life here doesn't really suit me too well, and I'm sure Tana would say the same. Unfortunately, a lot of our earlier companions that Caladar mentioned have either settled down or... passed away. For what it's worth, I'll be willing to help out. He then turns to Tana. How about you? I don't think that Bram would come with us, he seems too happy here with Bronwyn and his estate. Jericho might welcome the chance to escape the city, but I doubt it somehow. I've no idea where Rurak has gone, so it seems like it could be just us.

Tana responds to Lorn, I am considering it, even without Rurak. Desecrating the dead, even those deserving of such a fate, was distasteful at best. She glances at Alodar, hoping he does not ask for further details.

Addressing both Lorn and Alodar, I know Simonton borders the Inner Sea, but I truly know very little of its make-up. Do either of you know much of Simonton? Perhaps its history and whether it has known banditry in the past? I do beieve it is a fairly major port city and many imports travelling via the sea are offloaded there, though I do not know if there are more predominant trading parners than others. Perhaps you do? Also, have either of you been there perhaps? Do you know the route and the travel conditions, meaning what options do we have if we should decide to go and how long would each take?

Alodar looks at Tana, seemingly to be impressed by her knowledge. I have been to Simonton before. The most direct route is south from here and then east along the coast. It is a well travelled road and would be the least likely for us to have any run ins with bandits.

Lorn nods at Alodar's response. I've never been there, but that sounds about right from the maps I've looked at. He then turns to Tana. I somewhat agree about Rurak, but if Jericho doesn't want to come, then he'll be the only healer we have.

 OUT-OF-CHARACTER:
Dink hasn't responded to PM and hasn't logged into the boards since December 20, so it looks like Rurak has wandered off into the wilderness. We will assume you've come to the conclusion you need a replacement healer for Caladar's mission.

I've already made a post looking for a new player. In the meantime, feel free to continue your discussion about Simonton, etc.

I suppose we are bound to run into some sort of trouble. Perahps I can find an acolyte at the monastary who needs to travel spreading the word and helping those in need. Sounds like Simonton could use just that.

Otherwise I could inquire as to the availability of curative elixirs that we could take with us. Not sure how much we could get access to without having an immediate need.

Alodar, having been to Simonton, what can you tell us of this port city?

 OUT-OF-CHARACTER:
Going to be out town for a week, no internet access. I will try to catch up afterwards.

In the mean time, Tana would like to know how many healing potions she could purchse (at a discount?) from the Monastary? Armed with at least 2 CLW and 2 CMW per PC for the trip, I say we can go. Perhaps once we arrive we can rescue or otherwise run into a healer who can help. Anyone have Use Magic Device so we could use a Wand of CLW if we could find one?

I suppose I could ask the Lady Andolyn if she knows of anything that might help us. Regardless of what we find, I am still planning on letting Bram and Jericho know about our plans.

Lorn doesn't have Use Magic Device, nor would he suggest getting a wand unless someone can use it properly. The idea of potions is fine though, the problem might be in acquiring them.

As you discuss the trip and your need for a healer to accompany you, it seems someone in the Bear's Den has overheard your discussion. He approaches your table...

 OUT-OF-CHARACTER:
The person approaching you is our new player. I'll let him post an introduction, but it seems your need for a healer to travel with you may be solved.

Also, I heard from Rurak's player and he is back in. Depending on how quickly he gets his leveled up character to me, Rurak also might arrive at the inn or run into you as you depart Durham. Thus, you should have plenty of healing for what's to come. This is not unreasonable, since you needed both a cleric and druid to make it through the last adventure :)

Gahmahmee stands up from the table next to that of Tana, Lorn and Alodar and walks over to them. Hum, pardon me for interrupting Mylady and kind Sirs, but while enjoying my dinner in this here fine inn i could not help but overhear part of your conversation. Did i hear correctly that you are in need of a Cleric to accompany you on a journey? If this is the case then i'd be much obliged if you'd allow me a seat at your table so that i may properly introduce myself.

Alodar responds to Tana, Simonton is slightly larger then Durham. It is harbored and walled all around so it is acually safer from attack. Duke Haermond seems to be a good man and has done well protecting the city.

When the stranger approaches, Alodar looks him up and down and then looks to Tana and Lorn to see their response to this newcomer.

With a bow much appreciated, kind Sir

as Gahmahmee takes a chair and pulls it up to the table he says I'm Gahmahmee, a cleric of The Wanderer. Like the great traveler i spend my days wandering this world seeing it's sights and spreading his teachings to those who wish to hear of them. I've also taken it upon me to make the roads that i travel a bit safer then i found them by taking care of any bandits, brigands or monsters that would happen to prey on unwary travelers. After all, safe roads encourage travel which is how my Lord likes to see it.

Takes a sip from his ale As i was enjoying my dinner here i couldn't help but overhear that you needed a healer to accompany you on your trip to Simonton? If so, i'd like to offer my companionship and healing powers. It's always nicer to travel with a few people and there is strength in numbers.

Sense motive checks will tell you that the newcomer, Gahmahmee, is being honest and genuinely wants to assist on your journey. So, unless someone posts otherwise, I will assume you accept his offer and plan to depart for Simonton in the morning. Next validation (Friday, unless everyone posts sooner) will move forward into the journey. If there's anything you want to do, gear you want to collect, or information you want to gather from people in Durham or each other before leaving, post it here.

Well, I haven't got a problem with that. Lorn says, finishing his drink. We should probably aim to leave soon. Perhaps tomorrow or the day after. Where are you two staying? The last question is addressed to Gahmahmee and Alodar. Lorn will then spend the remainder of the night (assuming it's night) drinking with his newfound friends and trying to gain a little bit of information about them. He will happily speak of his and Tana's previous adventures as well.

In the morning, he will try and find Bram and Jericho to let them know. He will offer them the chance to accompany them, but is fully expecting them to decline. He will inform the Lady Andolyn and Lord Peredor of the upcoming journey and ask for permission to leave. If he finds Rurak, he will let the dwarf know about it and offer him the chance to join them as well. Otherwise, he will spend whatever time he has spare in looking over his spellbook.

Haven't found a place to stay yet but i reckoned that this Inn would do fine for a day or so before i moved onwards.

Gahmahmee will happily drink along and listen of tails of past adventures, sharing those of his own travels. Assuming the party doesn't leave tomorrow then he will wander about town and maybe also the forests a bit just to check out the sights and learn more about the town. If he finds any people in need of healing he will provide such a service for them in return for a meal, an ale or a fun tale.

 OUT-OF-CHARACTER:
Gahmahmee is a human standing 6ft tall and weighing in at about 120 pounds. He has black hair, brown eyes and is pink-skinned (so eg. a german, not sure how to say that in english). He is wearing plain clothes that are suited to travel, practical but nothing pompous. Around his neck is a silver symbol of his God, depicting a quarterstaff with two feet. (not sure what the holy symbol is so just made one up, if not correct pls let me know :P). His demeaner is calm but there are sparkles of joy in his eyes whenever he tells a tale about one of the travels he's made. There is a indentation on his right cheeck from a poorly healed swordwound, most likely a dodgy healing potion.

(i'm assuming i haven't been to Simonton yet, correct me if i'm wrong but i just chose a direction i came from on the basis of the Perearth background)

Sadly, my lady, i haven't been to Simonton yet. I hail from Denton. I travelled around mostly in the borderregion with Tharbria with my dad and after his unfortunate death i arrived here after an overland journey via Carrick and Wallace.

You finish the evening in pleasant conversation. In the morning, Lorn informs Andolyn and Peredur of the party's plans and neither of them have any issues. As expected, Bram and Jericho decline the opportunity to travel, as both are quite busy with their new pursuits. Rurak is nowhere to be found.

So it is that you soon set out on your trip to Simonton. That adventure begins here <-- Click away!

 OUT-OF-CHARACTER:
Gahmahmee's answers above are fine, except that it's Denton, not Brenton. The Wanderer's holy symbol is usually a disc showing a horizon line and a crescent. However, I like the quarterstaff with two feet, so we'll say that is a common alternate holy symbol for your deity.
