Sahid finds that the shiny black shards feel like stone, but they are slightly cool to the touch.

The source of the flickering green light is far beyond the range of the flashlight's beam; in fact, the light is so faint that shining the flashlight directly at it mostly washes it out, making it difficult to see. But you can tell that its source is some distance to the north, up the corridor.

at teh artifact... Yeah Sahid, those are pretty interesting. They dont match the stone of the big one?

If it's not clear from Sahid's description, the shards he found on the floor are shiny and black. They do not match either the base or the "mirror frame" of the big artifact.

Drawing his Glock with his right hand, Eric Lightner nods and slowly advances towards the green glow, casting his flashlight beam over the walls, floor, and ceiling of the passage immediately ahead, ready to halt if anything comes into view.

Sahid moves forward behind Eric and Brad, not pulling out his weapon yet. Do you think it is some type of flourescent moss perhaps?

The team moves further up the corridor and the searching flashlights soon reveal a large chamber. The far walls remain beyond the range of the flashlights, as does the source of the green glow. To the west, just at the edge of Brad's light, three short stairs lead to what appears to be a wide marble dais, but most of the structure is obscured by darkness. The whole place smells of animal spoor and wet fur.

The sibilant, almost human whispers present in the passage become a chorus in this massive chamber, eerily echoing off the walls.

Over the sound of the whispers, everyone suddenly hears the quiet patter of animal paws. Instinctively, Brad and Eric turn their weapons and their lights in the direction of the sound. Immediately, you see three wolves creeping toward you from the northeast! Two of the mangy curs (w2 and w3) look as if they haven’t eaten in days. A third wolf (W1) is a little larger than the others and does not look hungry in the least. A straight line of scar tissue bisects its face from forehead to muzzle. The wolves blink their red eyes as the flashlights turn in their direction and then begin to snarl!

Sahid back up while the others fire at the wolves, realizing the damger he quickly puts his camera away and draws his gun as well.

COMBAT ROUND 1

The sudden appearance of the snarling wolves appears to have shaken Brad and Eric a bit, as both fire their Glocks wildly and miss.

Dr. Alexander, on the other hand, retains his calm, drawing a shiny Colt as he steps up next to Eric. His shot hits W1 in the shoulder, narrowly missing the head. The big wolf yelps, but doesn't fall or flee.

Sahid backs up, putting away his camera and drawing his TEC-9.

Wolf 1 comes forward and clamps its jaws down on Eric's ankle [7 hp]. The wolf then hauls backwards, pulling Eric's leg from under him and causing him to trip and fall to the ground!

The other two wolves see this as an opportunity. They pounce upon the fallen Eric and bite him [Two more bites for 12 more hp total]. Eric looks very bad off, bleeding from multiple bites.

Standing up from prone provokes AoO's, according to the MSRD. Am I missing something special about Eric? Would you like to change his action? With the rolls you had, fighting from prone might be successful...

Hmm, according to my copy of d20 Modern, consulting Table 5-2 Actions in Combat on page 135, next to the move action "Stand up from prone, sitting, or kneeling", there is a "No" in the Attack of Opportunity column. If that got changed and they forgot to tell me, then, yes, Eric will stay prone and flail away... with the -4 to Defense for being prone... any chance these wolves could all suffer catastrophic cardiac infarctions this round? Pretty please with sugar on it? :shock:

Unfortunately, the wolves look like they've been exercising and eating lean, low-cholesterol foods. At least you've got a doctor present. And you know where the nearest hospital is.

COMBAT ROUND 2

From his spot on the ground, Eric drops his gun and punches W1 in the snout. This deters the wolf only a little.

Brad backs up and fires off two quick shots at W1. Both bullets miss and Brad yells, Damnit!

Dr. Alexander also backs away, firing his Colt at W1. His accuracy continues and the big wolf collapses with a bullet in its skull.

Sahid is not as lucky with his TEC-9, missing w3.

Wolf 2 bites Eric on the leg and he stops struggling, falling unconscious from his wounds. [6 hp]

Wolf 3 goes after Brad, but Brad is easily able to avoid the critter's bite.

With w3 closing in on Brad and himself, Sahid takes another shot at the wolf. He also can't seem to aim straight.

Wolf 2 comes after Dr. Alexander, but the good doctor proves difficult to bite.

Wolf 3 continues pursuing Brad, snapping unsuccessfully at his ankle.

COMBAT ROUND 4

Dr. Alexander breathes a sign of relief as he sees that Eric's worst wounds have begun to clot, making the threat of him bleeding out less immediate. [made the Fort save and no longer bleeding]

Brad provides w3 a brief opening as he chooses to shoot without backing away first. The wolf still bites only air and, as it lunges, Brad puts two bullets in it. Nearly mad with hunger, though, this isn't enough to bring the beast down.

Dr. Alexander moves toward his allies, shooting as he goes. His bullet grazes w3's ear, doing only minimal damage.

Sahid's gunshot fails to hit his target, probably due to the flurry of action Brad's created.

Badly wounded, wolf 3 again fails to bite Brad because of all the blood in its eyes.

Wolf 2 pursues Dr. Alexander, but still can't sink its fangs into any part of the doc's anatomy.

At Wolf2, Point Blank Shot, Single Shot (1d20+5=12, 2d6+1=9)

I dont know if that will hit or not, if i can still use an action point, I will. Can you roll that for me?

Unconcious, Eric dreams of a movie he saw long ago, in a place far, far away...

Yaha! Take that! Brad, feeling confident that this little wolf has nothing but whimper left, stands his ground and squezzes off one more round. His overconfidence gets the better of him as the wolf leaps at his gun hand, biting the wrist [3 hp]. Brad manages to avoid being dragged down by the wolf's bite, and his bullet pierces the wolf's jaw, finishing the creature off [Action point spent and it exactly turned a miss into a hit].

Dr. Alexander takes a wise step back and squeezes off a shot that takes care of w2.

Sahid has nothing left to shoot at.

COMBAT ENDS

Dr. Alexander rushes forward, pulling his medical bag from his pack. Hold your light so I can see, he tells Brad. Within mere moments, he has the worst of Eric's wounds bandaged and has Eric responsive again. [Two Treat Injury checks succeed: Eric is healed all of 1 hp and revived from unconsciousness, but still disabled at -5 hp.]

Dr. Alexander tells his patient, You're going to be able to walk out of here, Mr. Lightner, if you take your time. But we're going to have to get back to the van and the rest of my equipment to deal with the worst of these bites. Really, you'll need several days of close care to get back to full health. I'd also advise a tentanus shot as soon as possible... He turns to Brad, I can probably do something about that wrist, Mr. Laskin, but our friend's in no shape to continue. What now?

Shining the flashlights around reveals nothing new, other than the bloody wolf corpses. The green light still flickers up ahead, and there's that set of short stairs to some sort of dias to the left.

Thanks Doc, But the wrist will be fine for a bit. Can you get Eric back to the Van, Will he be ok? I''d like to get a little closer look at this light. Then we'll head out.

I would hope those wolves were the most dangerous things in here Doc. If you can get Eric back to the van, I would like to get a couple more pictures. Sahid is a bit shaken by the ordeal but does his best to maintain his composure.
