OUT OF CHARACTER
Its why I asked to join this one. I saw a stable DM (in gaming terms, sorry Pat, can't speak to other aspects :P ) with consistent posting and a really strong knowledge of the rules along with strong players. This session has really helped me become much better with the rules.

Here's a weird idea, - might be fun? (feel free to tell me to stuff it)
Would anyone like to switch characters? I like Tex, but he wasn't my creation. He's turning into a DPS machine (whenever the dice don't betray me.)
I was thinking about my rules statement above, and I'd swap with one of the spell casters if they want. Totally up to you. Just an idea.

OOC: Game History Discussion

Post by patransom »

I split out some OOC posts from the current adventure thread, because I think the discussion is worth continuing but don't want to clutter up the in-character gaming.

Game History:

This game started as a weird Gamma World-D&D mashup that ended, after a pretty long run, in a TPK. Some players wanted to continue, so we decided to start the Age of Worms adventure path on December 31, 2008. I had just started running an in-person game of the Age of Worms using D&D 3.5 that July, so figured there would be a synergy. Except, unlike my in-person game, this game was going to be d20 Modern, so the synergies turned out to be limited.

The transition from the TPK Gamma World-D&D mashup to Age of Worms happened here. Characters from the TPK ultimately were reincarnated as d20 Modern counterparts. More on that later.

In 2010, I realized that continuing to convert Age of Worms to d20 Modern was going to be more work than I could handle at the time. The players kindly agreed to switch to a more traditional D&D fantasy setting and play using the Pathfinder rules (1st edition, although we didn't know there would be a 2nd edition at the time). I expected a lot more synergy converting from my in-person 3.5 game to Pathfinder, and that turned out to be correct.

The transition from d20 Modern to Pathfinder happened here. Several characters from d20 Modern were reincarnated as Pathfinder fantasy counterparts. Some other characters joined immediately; some joined later. Again, more on that later.

Even though my in-person game met only every few months, and took a one-year hiatus when a player moved to Thailand temporarily, it soon passed this game. We finished the Age of Worms in May 2019. In comparison, right now in 2025, we're on adventure 4 of 11 here. Play-by-post is slow, but I'm still enjoying it and I hope everyone else is, too!

Character History:

When the Age of Worms started at the end of 2008, characters from the Gamma World TPK and their d20 Modern counterparts were (at least as far as I can remember):
  • Shareev -> Saheed Khan (klaxor)
  • Thanis Laskin -> Brad "Tex" Laskin (tdsprouse)
  • Esias Lightfoot -> Eric Lightner (CGM3)
  • Leenah -> Linda Thompson (shai-hulud)
  • Aeless Aereth -> Dr. Tividius Alexander (valinor)
One addition during the Modern game:
  • Marcus Tillsworth (duniagdra) joined in 2009
In 2010, some of these Modern adventurers then transitioned into Pathfinder counterparts:
  • Saheed Khan -> Lola (klaxor)
  • Brad "Tex" Laskin -> Texudus Treebender (tdsprouse)
  • Eric Lightner -> Cyrius of the Sudden Blade (CGM3)
  • Marcus Tillsworth -> Marcus Tillsworth (duniagdra)
Character additions and transitions since the Pathfinder conversion:
  • Edgar Frog (rednick90) joined at the outset in 2010 -> retired a few months later
  • Evan Prost (smeltdm) joined in 2011
  • Filge (jpetherick), initially an NPC, became a PC in 2011 -> died in 2012 -> replaced by Worrel immediately after
  • Marcus became an NPC in 2019 -> died in 2020
  • Texudus Treebender adopted by a new player (ElectroZman) in 2019
  • Ardrea (Jinxs-3d) joined in 2021
  • Lola adopted by a new player (Silverstone) in 2022

"Stable" is probably a matter of opinion...

I'm completely open to the idea of people switching characters, to people retiring their current character and replacing them with someone new, or to rebuilding their character concept entirely. Changes like this would be completely consistent with the history of this game (see post above).

According to the mysterious Lord of Time, you are all "Champions Eternal," so character changes can be easily explained as his reaction to the meddlings of the Chaos Lords.

Excellent idea!!

Also, I think that allowing PCs to be redesigned is a cool idea for those who would like to try something different than their current PCs!

I would be interested in tweaking my cleric or maybe changing entirely...
How would stats work, point buy?

She also has [for my style] magic items that dont align like daredevil soft paw feet [spelling, her sheet not in front of me atm]

When would a logical timing be? We are still in a dungeon..

Logical timing would be after we get out of this dungeon. So a little while in real time...

You can use the stat options from this post. Lots of other character creation stuff there, although we'll need to do something different for gear.
